My family and I are arriving in SJU at 1:30 pm on Apr 18 and looking for other people who would be interested to charter a plane from any company for a flight to Culebra same day ($300-$350 one way for a plane with 3+ people). Please let me know if anyone else interested...

Wow! What company is giving you a $300-350 rate? Or are you saying that you need 3 people and you will charge that for the extra passengers?

Matt at Culebra Air can fly from one up to three passengers for $300 total one way. Will depart from big airport (SJU) to Culebra at the time you select.

So, Oleg, you can't really share that plane if you and your family are more than three people because the max passengers for Matt is three. Are you looking for someone to share a 9-passenger charter with you through Vieques Air Link, Air Flamenco or M&N Aviation?

I don't need/want to share; just trying to help you get the question asked properly so that you might get some takers.

It would be nice to find small group of people to share larger charter plane and make the single ticket price acceptable.

Did you call VAL? They are $130 r.t. p.p.

Or ~$80 taxi ride to ferry dock and ferry over.

VAL has no free space left for three people on April 18, afternoon...
Perhaps we will use ferry but I am still open for a charter plane same date if some one else would like to share with us the plane rent price.

Ah, you are going the week leading up to Easter, which is known as Santa Semana (Holy Week). That is one of the busiest times on Culebra. If you want to be guaranteed to get over and back, you should book with Matt. Alternatively, the closer it gets, the more people you may find in the same situation that will take you up on the charter (we once chartered a plane by phone from the ferry dock and gathered 7 other desperate souls within 20 minutes). The ferry is probably more likely to work for you on a Monday than over the weekend, but when are you expecting to leave Culebra? If over Easter weekend or the Monday following, you really should book something solid; don't rely on the ferry. There will simply be too many people trying to get off the island at the same time.

Did you ask VAL or Air Flamenco about flying you from Ceiba? It's much cheaper. You take a cab to Ceiba, which is very close to Fajardo, and the flight time is less than 15 minutes.

We plan leaving Culebra Saturday 1pm, what might be a good thing once many people would come into the island at that time, not out. Do you think this strategy will work?

VAL has no free 3 spots for us on Saturday... :(
AirFlamenco is not selling individual tickets now too due to licensing issue...

On a ferry deck I would keep my eyes open for other desperate souls around - like your idea about ad-hoc charter at last minute from Ceiba, thank you!

I don't know, Oleg, I got stuck for a few hours on Culebra (via the ferry) one time and barely, barely made my flight back to the States -- which wouldn't have been so bad, except I had just started a new job and didn't want to be "that person". Having been to Culebra two dozen times or so, if I absolutely needed to get back to the States, I would not risk the ferry. In fact, my MO is -- never take the ferry to get off the island. If I were you trying to get off the island on a holiday weekend, I would take the 6:30 am. It's painful, but by the time the campers get up and get moving and get in line, they are all going to be crowding onto the 1pm ferry. Every ferry on a holiday weekend is crowded - coming and going. As far as I know, the ferry dock has not been fully repaired after Hurricane Earl, and so they are still running the smaller ferries, which hold less people. And when 80% of those people have camping gear, they hold even less people. This week - Santa Semana - is a big holiday week/weekends for the Puertoricans.

Maybe Terri @ Palmetto could confirm whether they are still using the smaller ferries.

In any event, last thing I'm saying on the subject, if you can afford to fly during this busy time, do it.
