I think the best is to hire a guide! My father always uses Chris Goldmark, but he is only there during the winter months.

Thank you. Would your father have any recommendations on where to stay. Also, has he ever done any bonefishing on the mainland of Puerto Rico. I can't seem to find anything except deep sea fishing from the mainland.

Jo,

Bone fishing is good on Culebra. The fish are wary, but big (probably a cause and effect relationship!). A good way to go bone fishing is to rent a motorboat, which we, Culebra Boat Rental (www.culebraboatrental.com), offer. We provide a board-mounted chart with the boat, and we'll show you the favored bone fish flats.

For a place to stay, we have Casa Ensenada Waterfront Guesthouse (www.casaensenada.com), which is on the Ensenada Honda, at the same location as the boat rental. Casa Ensenada guests get a $50 discount on boat rentals.

We will email more info to you about renting a boat and staying at Casa Ensenada.

Looking forward to seeing you in Culebra.

Butch,

My husband & I were there in May and just loved it, but we did not realize that fishing was allowed anywhere remotely close to the island?! We love to fish (within reason, we're not sport fishers). Everytime I asked where we could get fresh fish - people looked at me like I had three heads. I'm totally supportive of the marine protection and would gladly never fish again if it meant preserving the beauty we saw. However, can you give us the lowdown on what's required to rent one of your boats and how far off the island must you go to fish?
I think I saw a posting somewhere else on this site that mentioned fishing on Flamenco Beach? Can that be right?

Looking for any additional info. We're thinking of coming back in Feb '05 and will add fishing to our "things to do list" if it's a viable option.

Thanks in advance for any info & your help!

Michelle,

To answer your questions:

The main requirements for renting a Culebra Boat Rental motorboat are 1) renters must be at least 25 years old and 2) have experience in similar boats, in waters generally similar to Culebra's, and in basic coastal navigation. (Also, Puerto Rico statutes require that motorboat operators born after July 1, 1972 must have completed an approved motorboat operation course. Courses offered by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and by the U.S. Power Squadron are approved courses.)

As far as I know, fishing is allowed anywhere in the waters around Culebra, including in the Flamenco Beach bay, except in the marine preserve between Cayo Luis Peña and Culebra.

I will be pleased to rent a boat to you in February. In the meantime, I will email a motorboat rental contract to you, and also information about our facilities, boats, and making a reservation.

For your visit to Culebra in February, I hope you consider staying at the waterfront guesthouse, Casa Ensenada (www.casaensenada.com), that my wife and I operate next to the CBR pier. You will have the convenience of having your lodging and your boat at the same place, and you will get a $50 discount on the motorboat rental.

Looking forward to seeing you in February,

Butch Pendergast

Hi, Butch,

Me again. I know you know every inch of that island, so here's what I need help with. Once I get the boat from you, can you point me not only to the flats where I can maybe spot some fish tailing, but can you also recommend a few spots where I can take my boys pole-spearing for dinner catch? We will not spear around other divers or snorkelers, nor spear anywhere protected, and I do not allow my boys to use spearguns, only pole spears. Do you know the spots? Can we get to some of them from shore? We would like to be able to hit a few spots for a few snapper, hogfish, grouper, or other dinner fish. We eat what we spear, waste nothing, so we don't need a lot of fish.

Depth. My boys freedive to forty feet or so, me to seventy-five, so we'd need to be anywhere from 20 to forty feet, or at the edge somewhere, if that helps.

Thanks, and we're looking forward to seeing you in December.

Zane Cofield
