Coming to Culebra Next Friday
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I'm a beach bum from the Gulf coast (currently in exile in Dallas) and am hell-bent on making sure that I get to see Culebra while my boyfriend and I are in PR next week. That unfortunately means that we'll only be able to make a day trip over on Friday, though. I know, I know... not nearly enough time to really relax and see everything! But I digress...

We contacted Air Flamenco and were told us that that they had flights from Ceiba at 6:30am and 10:00am and and return flights at 2:00, 4:00 and 5:30pm. Which set of flights should we take to have enough time to properly relax a bit and do some snorkeling with some good coral?

My boyfriend suggested 10-5:30 which initially seemed like enough time, but from what I've read the flight times are often more of a "suggestion" and I'm concerned that that would leave us with too little time before having to head back to the airport. Any idea if that will be the case? I'm leaning towards 6:30 to 4 or 5:30 as that would give us a few more hours but that is early and a long day outdoors and I am not sure if publicos will be running or if businesses where we can rent bikes or scooters at will be open.

I don't really care how we get around. We just need to rent some snorkeling gear and head out to Flamenco and back from the aeropuerto if we do the 10-5:30 and if we'll be there longer I suspect we'll want to see another beach or two and stop by Mamacita's for lunch and a bushwacker. Publicos seems cheap and quick but the allures of a bike or scooter are strong, too.

So, reader, what would you suggest? Thanks in advance for any help and I can't wait to see your beautiful island for myself!

Cody,

Personally, i would do 6:30 to 5:30 and get in a full day. Then you get back to your hotel and can rest. Snorkeling at Flamenco is often up in the air especially if wind is coming out of North and it gets choppy. by the way, i find best snorkeling at Flamenco to right of "Shark Pen".

But to get a good snorkel try Melones Beach - less than 1 mile down town road across from Post Office and past medical offices. It is normally protected from the wind and after you head into the water, turn right and snorkel down a hundred yards or so and enjoy. It is also usually very quiet and you may have snorkeling to yourself.

You can ride bikes from down to either beach. Rent snorkeling gear at dive/gift shop near old school or at ferry dock. $10/day at gift shop.

So catch that early flight, go to Flamenco for a quiet morning, hop on the bikes for a lunch at Mamacita's and then ride to Melones for an afternoon snorkel.

Also try The Spot for lunch for tapas or lunch.

Enjoy!

John

This all sounds good but hope you are in pretty good shape. Biking in Culebra, which I did for 2 days involves some extreme hills in the sun.
But beautiful place, a must see if you have gone that far.
