My husband, 14-year-old daughter and I recently returned from 6 days on Culebra, our first visit. We loved it! The beaches were awesome, weather was great, and we loved the lack of crowds and “tourist-y” stuff. We used bikes almost exclusively for the trip, renting from Dick & Cathie, and other than one call to Dick to rescue us from Zoni when our daughter didn’t think she could make the ride back (Many thanks, Dick!!), it worked out fine. We were able to carry our snorkeling gear, lunches, groceries, cameras, etc. everywhere on the bikes by planning ahead and limiting ourselves to the essentials. I think next time (and there will be a next time), we will probably opt for a jeep at least part of the time so we can do Brava and Resaca as drive/hike trips, since those were the only major beaches we didn’t hit. The jeep would also allow us to be out at night more, since it gets dark pretty early compared to where we live.
Don and our daughter snorkeled Melones, Carlos Rosario, Tamarindo, and Punta Soldado, and said it was great. I don’t snorkel, but loved lying on the beach, checking out the little tide pools, watching the birds and walking on the beach. We also visited Flamenco and Zoni, for swimming and body-surfing. We rented Casa Azul (dollhouse), so we cooked some of our own meals and ate out some. The only place mosquitoes were a problem was inside. The breeze kept them away outside, but the ones that got into the house were very hungry! The only place we used repellent was inside. It took a couple of days to get adjusted to island time, but we learned not to wait until we were really hungry to go into a restaurant.
What did we love about Culebra? The beaches, the weather, the chickens (except for the occasional rooster-crowing contest at 3 a.m.), the food, the undeveloped environment, the friendly people, etc. What do we hope to do differently next time? We only saw one turtle (Don’s first snorkeling venture at Melones) and hope to see more; I need to brush off my Spanish from college (don’t ask how long ago that was); and we’d probably bring a few groceries from Fajardo – even though we like to support local stores, the selection isn’t the greatest.
Now we are back to reality (Upper Michigan) where it has snowed two days since we got back and we can’t wear short sleeves to show off our tans! We have tons of pictures to remind us of our good times, and are already planning our next trip. I don’t want to tell everyone how wonderful it was, though, ‘cause if too many people find Culebra it won’t be such a special place anymore.
