Camping budget
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello,

My name is Lina and I am planning a trip to Culebra for 4 days and 3 nights camping in Flamenco Beach. We already made our reservations for our flights to get to Culebra and transportation is set while we are at the island. However I need help finding someone that can take us to Luis Pena and back one of the day's we will be in Culebra. I keep emailing companies in this site, and NO one responds!!

My trip is from the 26th until the 29th. I also need help in figuring out where can I do my grocery shopping for the camping. As there is a weight limit on the flights, I cannot buy it in PR. Where is the best/cheapest place to go? How much do you guys estimate it will be for two people to eat for our stay, when we will probably hit 2 or 3 restaurants at night and try them out? Need help please. I am on a budget, but want to be able to do as much as I can while I am in this AMAZING and beautiful island.

I live in the states but I am from PR. I haven't been to Culebra in almost 4 years, so I don't know what is still there or isin't.

Thanks for the response through email.

I have full-camping gear available to me from relatives in the main island that I will pick up before flying to Culebra. I also have a car available for use for our time staying in the island. What are the names of the grocery stores that are close by? Where in the island are they located? In town?

Also, I am looking for a moderate budget, as our biggest expense will be like you can see, will be food and activities done in the island.

thanks!

Lina

We shopped at Milka, which is in town. You can also eat inexpensively at the kiosks at Flamenco. For dinner, we ate at Susie's, Mamacita's and Dewey Dock. Have a wonderful trip. I believe your weight limit is 25lbs. Maybe someone who has been more recently than me will give you updated info.

too bad you bought your plane tickets already.
where are you flying to culebra from?
is it ceiba? or san juan(or isla grande)

i would suggest taking a private transportation service to the ferry instead. the driver could stop at the supermarket or walmart on the way.
theres no real weight limit for the ferry although you may have to pay a surcharge if you bring alot of things.

four people can go roundtrip from san juan international to culebra by way of publico and the ferry for around $200

Hello~

I have already purchased my flight tickets leaving from Isla Grande to Culebra. I have all my camping equipment ready, as transportation. I need help with getting to Luis Pena one day so I can snorkel and see the beautiful island.

I will definetly try that grocery store. I LOVE Dingy Dock, and Mamacitas. Have never gone to Susie's. Want to try it. Is Milka the store mid-a very steep hill in town? Just remember a grocery store in a steep hill.

Thanks!
Lina

Regarding Luis Pena, I have taken a kayak from the shores of Tamarindo over to the East side of LP. It's about a 15 minute paddle straight over to a sandy beach. LOTS of living reefs and fan corals over there. Tight getting to the sandy beach between the coral heads but you can see them clearly in the day. If the swells are big out of the North I would not recommend it as you will encounter them in the middle of the pssage.

Have fun!

No Milka is on the road to Susie's. Just across the bridge and hang a sharp right. It will be the first building to your right. Aquatic Adventures can take you to Luis Pena to snorkel. Have a wonderful trip.

Weight limit on the airplane from Isla Grande to culebra on Flamenco Air is 25 pounds although I think if you arranged ahead of time, they would take more weight, they just need to plan on it.
I also vote for either grocery store-Milka or the one on the hill (senior moment, don't remember the name)both are fine. Just remember to plan ahead as they are both closed on Sundays. The produce truck comes over to the island on Fridays (at least last year they did)-he parks at the intersection by the airport. Get there early-last year he had great produce but it goes early. I vote for the water taxi to Luis Pena as then you don't have to worry about how sturdy you are to get a kayak over there and back and currents, etc. There are lots of other places to snorkel however if you don't want to go to Luis Pena. We love Soldado consistently.
Also, the Deli , El Eden will make you a great picnic lunch to take with you-they have fabulous food and are very accomodating. They close at 4 pm some days so if you can't make it back by dinner, that's a good option. Also, don't forget about Cable beach--have someone point out the road to you behind the Deli. Flat beach, easy access-but people camp there so be aware of being in someone's "space".
We like Mamacitas consistently for dinner - Susies is good but the wait is outrageous. Also, if you really want to splurge a bit, hit Juanita Banana's. Fantastic food, a little $$$. Call ahead for reservations. Nothing is better than the pinchos and food on Flamenco when you're hungry but last year they were only there on the weekends.
Sorry to be so long-can you tell we love it there?
Have fun - we'll be there in 2 weeks, can't wait

Milka isn't closed all day Sunday...they are open until 1. Also, Genesis is open until about 5 and Isla del Sol is open til mid-day as well. Actually, Cheli's - Superette Mayra, the one on the hill - is the only colmado closed all day Sunday.

Since I work part time at Susie's I can pretty much vouch that *outrageous* is a relative term for a wait for dinner...there isn't a restaurant on Culebra that sometimes won't have a long wait, but not as a norm.

This year finds the number of boats available for day sails and charters at an all time high. Ask around for information on options.
