Honeymoon
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Chris Policastro (---.cha.bellsouth.net)

I'm trying to find a place to stay in Culebra for my honeymoon next March and I think Costa Bonita looks like a nice place to go. I am however concerned about the upkeep after reading some reviews. Can anyone give me an update on the condition of Costa Bonita or give me some advise on a good place to stay for a honeymoon? I am looking to spend around $150 or less per night.
Thank you,
Chris

I don't think much has changed over at Costa Bonita.

I suggest that you call Vacation Planners and give them all of your criteria. They have several properties and can help you to find one that fits your needs in Costa Bonita or elsewhere.

With no excuses, I'd steer you away from Costa Bonita. It is one of those things that sounds much better than the reality. If you are looking for more upscale, you could try Seaborne or Bahia Marina to hit that price range and still have a pool. No you aren't right on the water but on the other hand, the land around you isn't filled with sewage, which is a major plus! (and yes, I was out there last week and yes, that is still one of the big issues)

Good afternoon Chris,

We just had 2 honeymoon couples this past week, one of whom just posted on Isla Culebra (Matt G. with the question about "Culebra Musts") & thought that you might email him to get his impressions/ideas.

Best,
Terrie

MJ,

It's possible (possible?) Matt G doesn't have a good story to tell. Maybe he's the one who asked about the haunted house and sat out there for hours? LOL!

In any event, Chris, avoid it. Bahia Marina or Seabourne are recommended over Costa Vomita. I crack myself up.

Happy Diving!
Debbie

The land around Costa Bonita is FILLED with "sewage"?

(see post above)

Yes, I know that Costa Bpnita was a development that went against the grain of many locals, and folks who had bought property/settled in Culebra in the last twenty years, who now consider themselves "locals" (the definition of local is relative), and I know that the project had water delivery problems and questionable sewer facilities (according to some), but I am not a soils expert, nor have I conducted scientific tests of the soils at Costa Bonita...

so my honest question is: the land around Coast Bonita is REALLY filled with sewage? That's a very strong statement. The stench must be awful, and the health hazard must be extremely dangerous.

I would like to know specifics, please.

Is it specific enough to know the locals now call it Black Foot beach? Yes, there is a smell and yes it is dangerous. Filled means seeping. There are also other structural problems. Along with infastructural issues. It's a strong statement because it's a serious reality, and only one of many reasons it is sitting there like the Shining.

I don't know where your little bit on "locals" is coming from, it doesn't have any revelance to anything as it is not about like or dislike (or how long someone has lived here or what the sociological implications are on self-thought) when a place that big is that poorly built,. The people who bought into it have been left holding a rather expensive bag of not much. Life it or not it's a financial fiasco for them. If you want specifics, if it is that important to you, find a unit owner and speak with them.

Thanks for the expanded information.

It is not my nature or intent to argue about such things, only to garner facts.

Chris,

My new bride and I just got back from 10 days in PR (7 of which were on Culebra). It was an incredible little place to spend our honeymoon. We stayed at Bahia Marina the whole time and were really satisfied with our accommodations. The manager, Jose, and his wife, Lisa, were really nice and the rest of the staff were very friendly and fun to hang around. The restaurant is rather tasty too! From our experience and what some of the people on the island said, Bahia Marina is definitely one of the nicest places on the island as far as hotels go. I can't speak for guesthouses or vacation homes that people rent out.

If you and your new bride like secluded beaches that blow your mind, than both of you will definitely enjoy Culebra. Flamenco is beautiful, but we both liked Zoni better because it is so much more secluded and just as beautiful in our opinion :). If you like (or think you like) sailing, check out Capt. Bill Penfield. We went out for a day with him and it was very nice. He fixed us a meal while we were anchored at Tortuga beach on Culebrita.

If you have any questions, let me know! We just came back Nov 25th, so the place is still fresh in my memory.

Stephen

Thanks everyone for their advise and help. I have reserved 4 nights at the Bahia Marina for March. I looked forward to experiencing all Culebra has to offer.
I've also bought new snorkeling gear for my fiance and myself so I guess my new post should be:
"MUST SEE SNORKELING LOCATIONS."

Again, I think everyone for their advice.
Chris
