Comments on proposed itinerary?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I am in the process of planning a 7-day trip for two (me and my husband). This will be our first trip to anywhere in the Caribbean, and I am so excited! I am most interested in quiet, uncrowded places, and seeing some nature, but don't want to miss anything. Plan to fly into San Juan on Sunday Jan. 10. Rent a car and spend Sunday and Monday night in or near San Juan, seeing old San Juan on Monday and El Yunque on Tuesday. Spend Tuesday night in Fajardo, take the first ferry to Culebra, rent a vehicle and maybe stay at the Seabourne Wednesday and Thursday night. I think the biolumenescent boat ride near Veiques sounds awesome, so I think I want to go back to Fajardo Thursday night and take the first ferry to Veiques Friday morning and spend Friday night on Veiques, then head back to San Juan Saturday night and catch a flight home on Sunday. I would love to hear any suggestions or comments!

Jerry's Jeeps accross the street from the airport offers the best price. Dick and Cathy rent bicycles (and they'll deliver them to wherever you're staying), but although the island is small, it's hot and very hilly so unless your in great physical condition and you don't mind pushing yourself, it's not really a viable transportation option.

Flamenco beach is the jewel of the island. From Zoni beach (on the east end) you can see St. Thomas. Snorkling is great -- ask for the best spots to snorkle when you get here. Mamacita's offers the best dining atmosphere on the island (beware the bushwackers - they're delicious, but deadly). There is a great bongo trio every Saturday night at Mamacita's.

Culebra is truly like no other island in the Carribean. Peaceful, tranquil and beatiful. Have a wonderful time.

That sounds like a great plan, and a great time of year to do it! You may want to consider spending Tuesday night at/near the rainforest, rather in the "city" of Fajardo. You will LOVE the nightnoise of the rainforest, and it is still close enough to make the 9am ferry. I recommend Ceiba Country Inn http://www.geocities.com/countryinn00735/. We stayed there for one night in September, 2008.

Jerry's Jeeps is also our choice for car rental.

I haven't been to Seabourne in many years, but believe it is a good choice as well.

Happy Diving!
Debbie

Hi Sandy,
A really neat place to stay near old San Juan is thegalleryinn. You can look it up that way on the web. You probably won't want a car in old San Juan.
On a 7 day trip, I would consider flying between Culebra and Vieques. Air Flamenco or the other small airlines will do this but I believe it is still "on demand". It would save you time, hassle, and a night in Fajardo. It's a 10 or 15 minute flight, and an experience in itself.
On Vieques you will probably want to stay on the south side of the island, near Esperanza. I recommend Island Adventures for the bio-bay tour, but you have to make reservations. There are also kayak outfits that will take you to the bio-bay. The effect is best when there is no moon, so check your trip against the moon calendar if you can.
Have a wonderful time! I have not found anything that compares with Culebra and Vieques.

Hi Sandy
i think youre wasting alot of time travelling.

you should consider doing some flying as well as the ferry.
especially between vieques and culebra.
you will save alot of time.

this is my suggestion for your itinerary.
i would choose 3 days in vieques and two on culebra.

but theyre interchangable on the itinerary.

Sunday get to PR and go to Vieques(or culebra)
stay till tuesday,
go to culebra(or vieques)
stay till friday

at this point you should ferry or fly to ceiba
rent a car one way with the drop off at SJU
make the reservation online

you can also get a hotel midway between SJ and ceiba or just in san juan.
its not that much of a ride to get to el junque from SJ so it doesnt matter

if you get to sj on friday in the afternoon, check it and old san juan out that day.
go to el junque saturday.
go home sunday after you drop your car off at the airport.

how does that sound?

it does sound like a lot of transit time.

Sandy - although we usually go straight to Culebra, last September we did an island tour ending in Culebra. We spent one night in San Juan, one night in Rincon, one night in Ponce, one night in Ceiba (at the inn I recommended). We saw the fort, we went to the Arecibo Observatory, we went to the Camuy caves, Cabo Rojo, Guanica, etc. What you are proposing is much less travel/transit time than what we did, and we had a blast! Depends on what you want to do - be a tourist, travel around and see things you've never seen before or just hang out on a beach? In my opinion, PR offers the best of both worlds.

Sometimes, my links don't work, so if this doesn't linky dinky, just copy and paste it - it's a photo gallery, with narrative slides about our trip.

Hi Sandy,

We went to PR this past August and we did the bio bay in Fajardo - it was the most amazing thing I've ever seen - I'm a biologist and was just blown away by the bay - if your only going to Vieques for the bio bay tour you can save yourself a trip and see the one in Fajardo - you won't be disappointed. I suggest wherever you decide to do it, you do it by kayak - it was so much better of an experience seeing it up close rather than seeing it on a larger boat. Make sure you do it on a day that the moon is NOT full to get the full effect - it should be very dark out.

Also the Camuy Caves is something you absolutely don't want to miss - it was also very amazing.

We are going back to PR (my father's family lives there and they also have a get-a-way house in Culebra) in June and I can't wait. We plan on staying in Culebra for about 3 days to do some scuba diving.

If your interested in scuba diving in Culebra call Taz at Aquatic Adventures - he is stationed in Culebra and he will give you a resort course if your not certified and take you on a dive. We went diving with him in August (me, my boyfriend, and my 16 year old son are all certified divers). Taz and his wife were VERY nice people.

Have Fun!!!!

Flying between SJ, Culebra and Veiques makes good sense, and would save alot of time. I have heard the flight can be rather rough, and I tend to get really naseous on such flights, but if it is only 10-15 minutes, I think I can suck it up! --Sandy

while not as smooth as a jumbo jet, the props are a lot smoother than the ferry. the only thing that's ever skeeved me is they will on occasion go a little sideways in a cross wind.
