Hola. Prospective resident here.

Is there a noticeable tarantula presence on the island and if so, how do oyu deal with them?

In the past 15 years I have seen one or two on Culebra. And that was because a tree fell over and uprooted it's nest. They are very docile and will not hurt you. They wouln't even hurt a fly, well maybe a fly. So not to worry.

Hola! You can find information about the tarantula that inhabits Puerto Rico, Common Puerto Rican Brown Tarantula, Puerto Rican Pygmy Tarantula, Cyrtopholis portoricae, also known commonly in Spanish as "la arana pelua".

Have fun reading about this spider. What is more commonly seen around the beach area campsites are scorpions. Always use precaution if you are bit by one of these insects. Clean and disinfect the wound and if you are feeling ill, running a temperature, shivers, sweats, etc. consult a doctor or go to the ER.

Hola! Culebra means snake.

You can read about how Culebra got its' name if you go to the INTRODUCTION part of this website and it's under HISTORY.

Sorry for the late response...but....I saw a tarantula near one of the beaches...tan in color and not really that large...no biggie....I HATE spiders and I wasn't really alarmed by this one......HOWEVER.....I had rented a vacation home a while back and awoke with a Mango Spider perched on a mosquito net about 8 inches from my face. THIS was absolutely horrifying....AND....the darn thing was about as big around as my fist.....after I inched out of the bed, I grabbed a newspaper to swat the monster and it reared up at me!!!! Needless to say, I told the owners of the vacation home that morning about the scary visitor....and the husband sent the wife in to exterminate later that day! Seriously! :-)

I did not know that you could find the Mango Spider in Culebra or the rest of the island. I couldn't find it in the list of endemic fauna of Puerto Rico. Did you have too many Medallas or pitorro maybe? LOL!!!

It's the second one....and honest, it was there on the mosquito net.....the owners told me they see them every now and again since the spiders were attracted to mango trees and there was a huge mango tree by the bedroom building that was budding fresh fruit.

This spider totally freaked me out....I mean, literally, it was about 8 inches above my face....not a nice picture to wake up to.

I think I drank more Medallas that day than any other while on Culebra!
