Why did ferry service stop between the islands?

Anyone know the reasoning behind the ferries not running between Culebra and Vieques any longer? Was it cost prohibitive, not enough people?
Are the ferries run or subsidized by the government?

Good afternoon,

From my understanding the ferry actually ran from Fajardo to Vieques & then ON TO Culebra & the reverse. As such, it wasn't so great for folks heading to/from Culebra as the passage was longer.

I don't believe there have been any ferry trips between Culebra & Vieques for quite a number of years.

The ferries are subsidized by the govt. which is what keeps them so affordable :)

there used to be a ferry that went directly between the two islands.
same with regular flights.
but i think there wasnt enough demand and it was, indeed, cost prohibitive.

The ferry did indeed exist, but was for workers coming over from Veques to Culebra and for a specific project - or so I remember
