Abandoned tanks and other military relics?

Reading a description about Culebra on another site, I found a statement saying "Abandoned tanks and other military relics dot the area west of Flamenco Beach." I visited Culebra in 2000 and did not know of this nor had heard anything about this. I think it would be interesting to see some of these, I will be returning in May, and was wondering if anyone knew exactly where to find these relics and if they are in fact open to the public. Thanks

There are two thanks. You walk down the beach beyond the campground. One tank is directly in the sand on the beach and the other one overlooks the beach.

You can't miss them if you walk to the left end (facing the water) of the beach

Thanks! I will have to look for them, so I guess while you are on Flamenco Beach facing the water you would walk to your left and fins one?

You can find two walking to the left. Be very careful in you decide to go through the thick brush looking for them. A couple of years ago they had to blow up a left over navy bomb from when they used to shell the island. It was near the water tanks on the hill behind Flamenco Beach

This is a very serious topic. Some of the tanks are in closed areas. Areas are closed to the public because of dangerous unexploded ordnance (UXO) still located there. Please do not climb over fences or venture into areas marked as closed, this is no joke. Stay in areas determined to be safe for public use, a lot of work has gone into designation of safe areas and closed areas are closed for a reason. I still hear of people going into closed areas out of curiosity and it has to be one of the stupidist and maybe last thing that you could ever do. Please don't do it, there is no way for you to know where the UXO are and they are very unstable. Enjoy the public areas where you don't have to worry about such things. Thanks.

I have done a considerable amount of scuba diving in Culebra and the Cays off of culebra and YES there are unexploded ordnance on the island. I have seen seven unexploded ordnance under the water, so pay attention to the thread that tells you to stay away from areas closed off to the public.

What our peers have said is true, there are many unexploded bombs or mines there, but if you walk to your left (facing the water), you will find two outstanding tanks....WE did...and the kids had a blast...lots of pics taken (as you can imagine) and none of the danger.. Flamenco is a Paradise...On a side note, when people from Culebra say the beach is crowded, they mean abou 50 people on a 3/4 stretch of a mile...in US standards, That's not crowded AT ALL!!!

HAVE FUN AND COME BACK SOON...by the way I'm not from Culebra...I was born and raised in Bayamon, but loved the island of Culebra.
