car rentals
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We are planning our first family vacation to Puerto Rico in July and hope to spend about a week in Culebra. I keep reading about renting a Jeep, but nothing about renting a car. Are Jeeps necessary? Are regular cars even available for rent? Thank you.

Carlos rents Jeeps (real Jeeps) and Chrysler mini-fans. Jerry's fleet pretty much consists of Jeep-like vehicles, namely Suzuki Vitaras and other smaller, older Suzuki vehicles. There are no sedans or small cars for rent on the island. Is a jeep necessary? No, not really. Carlos will let you take his Jeeps off-road, but is very conscious of every nick and scratch. Be sure you inspect the Jeep very carefully before you drive it off the lot (Carlos' employees encourage you to do so). Jerry does not want his beaters taken off-road due to the danger of acacia thorns popping the tires and the fact that he has lower clearance vehicles.

doesn't Willy rent old VW things?

I wouldn't go off road in anything, it is a fragile place and those acacias are vicious.

if one is renting, I would recommend something rugged as while the roads are better than years ago, they can be quite steep in places (road down to Zoni for instance) and in someplaces elsewhere a bottom-out would be possible.

I want a standard transmission unless the worst I have to do is parallel park around the corner from Mamacita's. backing in uphill with a stickshift and a jeep full of second guessers? get out. esp. the ones whose names are not on the agreement.

you'll see people driving regular cars, but frankly I'd rather not take the chance of a cracked oil pan.

Hey all...

Heading to the island next week as part of my honeymoon as my brother's friend down in PR required us to spend at least 2 days out there.

I know that Carlos and Jerrys, you have to be 25 to rent. is that the same with Dick & Cathie? I ask because I am going to be 24 years and 10 months when we're down there.

We're going to be staying at the Culebra Beach Villas... is that too far to walk if we're coming in on the ferry? Also, how long does the 3 pm ferry take to get to the island?

I don't know about the rental age with Dick & Cathie, but Culebra Beach Villas is way too far too walk with all your belongings (about a 45-60 minute walk from town). The 3pm ferry generally arrives around 4:30pm. Publicos will be ready and waiting when you get off the ferry to take you to Flamenco Beach for $3 per person.
