camping concerns

I visited Culebra twice, Feb 2003 and Mar 2004. Two very different experiences. Last year we (my girlfriend and I) camped at Flamenco in Section E which was set aside for persons wanting a more relaxing, laidback experience. It was nice and quiet and peaceful. This year the rules had changed. We could only camp in sections A thru D. Not nearly as pretty and much louder. We don't have a problem with others wanting to party all night long, but we really didn't want to be in the middle of it. Rumor has it that there's a new mayor and he is the one that changed the rules about where people can/can't camp. Does anyone know anything more than rumors about this? Also, does anyone know of an address (email/snailmail) for the mayor so I can send him a letter/email expressing my concerns?

I'M PLANNING TO CAMP OUT IN JUNE HOW WAS THE CAMPSITE?ANY COMPLAINTS. HOW FAR FROM THE BEACH IS THE CAMPSITE IS IT WALKING DISTANCE? IS THE TOWN CLOSE ENOUGH TO WALK TO? ANY ADVISE ON THE CAMPSITE?

Hi Liz, every year i go to culebra and this year im going on june 30-may 5, I love it there but what ever you do. dont even think of walking unless you like to, its pretty far from the bahia, i advise you to take the bus or rent a jeep. well anyway have fun, you will love it too

Camping at Flamenco is great except for the concerns raised in my original message. The beach is no more than 30 seconds or so of walking from any point in the camping sections. Section E is right up against the beach whereas the other areas are separated from the beach by a little used sandy road. The town is about 2 miles from Flamenco. We've walked it with and without backpacks. I enjoy the occasional walk because you get to see the island in a different way. Most people choose to go by taxi or rent a vehicle however. If you can avoid weekends, there is best as the party scene kicks up then (especially on holiday weekends); unless you want to party, then you will have plenty of others to do this with. I suggest calling the campground office and inquire as to the currents regs. They might change periodically due to maintenance needs, public safety, and other factors. The personnel there want to please and will answer your questions if you call them at 787-742-0700. If you cannot get the information that you seek at that number then please call 787-742-3880 and ask them. It is best to get the information straight from the pertinent sources. The staff are very professional and courteous.

THE MAJOR WAS NOT THE ONE THAT MADE DOES KINDS OF RULES. FOR EVERYONE TO KNOW FLAMENCO BEACH BECAME ONE OF THE BEST BEACHES IN THE WORLD. FLAMENCO BEACH WAS DESIGNATED TO BE WITH A BLUE FLAG. WHICH MEANS THAT NOW FLAMENCO BEACH HAS NEW RULES TO BE CARRY ON. BUT AT THE END IS GOOD FOR THE PRESERVATION OF IT. HOPE EVERYONE CAN UNDERSTAND IT.

I'm a little confused. What do you mean by 'FLAMENCO BEACH BECAME ONE OF THE BEST BEACHES IN THE WORLD'?

Was it not already a beautiful beach?

What are the considerations given to label a beach 'Best Beach in the world'?

And, what is the meaning of a beach 'WITH A BLUE FLAG'?

Is this terminology used by the tourism industry...???

We are a group of College students and are planning on camping at Flamenco in late May after our term ends.

Would you be so kind and explain all of the above in plain everyday language?, We would really appreciate it.

As a follow to A.K.'s questions, Mitchelle do you know who made was involved in making the changes to the rules regarding where one can camp? If it wasn't the mayor, then who? I really want to express my concerns about the changes directly to the correct person(s). It made the experience so much less enjoyable. I agree that Flamenco is one of the most beautiful beaches I've even been to. I plan to go again regardless of what the rules are, but I think those in authority should know how their decisions impact on the experience of those who come to enjoy this wonderful place.

When I talked to Hyme- he is one of the rangers at the camp- he gave me some interesting insight. He told me how the local Puerto Ricans come there for easter weekend and trash the beach.

Also, not that long ago- Culebra was much more of a secret than it is now. With each year- the number of visitors is increasing. This island can only take so much. I would rather it be a secret

In answer to A K and Dwight:

The travel channel has rated Flamenco Beach the Best beach east of Hawaii in the USA.

"The Blue Flag works towards sustainable development at beaches/marinas through strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education etc. ..." you can look up the rest of the description by doing a search for Blue Flag Beach on Google.

I'm not sure who makes the decisions on the campgrounds but expect it to probably be the campgrounds managers not the mayor.
