camping in mid-April with kids

We are planning to camp on Culebra in mid-april with two 8yr old kids and I have a couple of questions:
1) What will we need for bedding at night (besides the pads)? How warm/cold is it tenting?
2) Where/how do people get their drinking water?
3) Can I get a cup of coffee/tea on the beach in the morning or do I need to bring a stove to get my morning fix?
4) Anything special we should know about being on Culebra with nature loving 8 year olds? Any place that would be especially good snorkeling for them?

Thanks!

1. A sheet and light blanket is usually plenty.
2. The water in the campground tanks is probably safe, but I'd get water in Dewey at one of the groceries.
3. Not sure.
4. Go to the parking lot by the ranger office and walk to the rear where you'll see a trailhead gate. Follow the path up over the hill and down the other side (don't forget to "AAAAHHHH!" as you crest the hill) about 1 mile total. At the bottom bear to the right until you see the cut through to the beach, ignoring a side path to the left. Continue to the right on the beach until you can see the gap in the reef. Find some shade in the sea grapes to put your stuff. Swim out through the gap until the wall allows you to turn right (about 100 yds.) The reef is tremendous from there on out and to the right. As you go further to the right, be aware of the currents and don't overswim your ability to return. This is the famous Playa Carlos Rosario.

I've just come back from a camping/snorkeling trip... I brought a fleece blanket with me and was a little chilly (though I'm one of those people who's always cold). Drank the water at camp & was fine. Don't think there's anywhere to get a hot beverage in the morning.

I loved the snorkeling at Carlos Rosario but if the kids don't want to swim that far out, you can try Tamarindo Grande... the "side path to the left" in the above post goes there, and there's reef much closer to shore with lots of soft coral, though the fish are all juveniles.

There are tons of lizards on Culebra... in the grasses and on the trees... you're sure to see plenty even if you don't look, but might have fun looking. Also see if you can find the small burrows in forested areas where tarantulas live, and try to coax them out by getting them to cling to a piece of grass you insert.

If you go to Tamarindo Grande beach and head right, there are some tide pools in the limestone there with baby fish, anemones, hermit crabs, chitons and more. Might be more elsewhere... those were the only beaches I really explored.

Thanks Doug and J, very helpful information. We are all really excited about the trip! My son will be thrilled about the lizards and potential tarantula spotting!

Don't forget boogie boards for Flamenco Beach. We had a ton of fun. We bought ours at WalMart in Fajardo. Seems to me I have seen inflatable ones here in the states at Wallys.

They sell boogie boards for $20 at Flamenco Beach. My 10-year old triplet girls loved them. Bring waterproof sunscreen. Instead of towels we took Shamwows for packing purposes. They worked great!

Your kids will also love the snorkeling at Melones, which is right in Dewey. Hardly any swim.
