If we want to walk/hike to Brava and Resaca what kind of footwear would be recommended?
Thanks

go barefoot! frolic like a spring lamb before the slaughter!

it can be rocky, while I've been fine in water socks while carefully stepping (there are many brands, but my Speedos have lasted quite a while), something with an even sturdier sole (not necessarily boots) might be preferred. I like the flexibility of my socks and that they also go in the water and are good against urchins, it does take a few minutes to get used to actually walking in the dang things as opposed to street shoes. But then my feet are a little calloused already. YMMV.

there are acacia thorns to watch for everywhere, but as far as I'm aware that's about the worst to watch for and few shoes will protect if you really stomp on one.

Thanks Richard. That's what I was hoping to hear. I am bringing water shoes and Chaco sandals and beach trekkers (good soles, but holes on the sides). I saw a description on another blog where someone said you needed hiking boots to get to Resaca, but I don't want to lug hiking boots. I figured that was probably overkill.

Good afternoon,
I usually wear sneakers for Brava/Rasaca.

I'm going to disagree with my friend, Richard. They arent "just" acacia thorns, they are flat tire causing daggers. Jerry of jeep renting fame makes the caution part of his speil, and a painful, bloody footed walk over from Carlos Rosario brought it home for me. You don't need boots but I wouldn't hike Culebra without sturdy leather shoes. My pair of pennies.

Doug - you're absolutely right, we had a nasty version of Acacias (my folks called them Locust trees) in Missouri, so perhaps I was being kinda flippant. ours usu. put out a good 2+ inch thorn, and we were taught to watch out as children, so I probably forget that others never had to and so have a different perspective.

whatever the footwear, do step carefully. If you want to observe the view. stop. and then go back to watching the path.

My GF, who is 96 and lives in Ark. stuck a "locust" (acacia) thorn in his head while clearing brush in a side ditch. He pulled it out and never had any problems until 60+ years later when the remainder of the thorn started poking out of his head!! We always wondered why my PawPaw was such a sorehead!!
