Culebra Accommodations in March
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello my name is Brian. This board has been so helpful in planning my trip and I would like to thank you all for a great resource. THANK YOU!!

I will be in Puerto Rico from March 6- 14. I will be spending the first couple days in San Juan and then head toward Culebra on Monday(9th) or Tuesday(10th). We have only made reservations for the first couple nights in San Juan. Do you believe I should make reservations or are room readily available mid week? Also if anyone has any suggestions on places to stay in the $150( pref. &around &75) and below a night range I would appreciate the advice. Thanks in advance.

Brian

Good morning Brian,
March is the busiest month of the year & as such I would recommend reservations in advance.

Have a nice trip.

Thank you for the info. Looks like I will be making reservations. My intentions were to come to Culebra for a couple days and then head back to the big island, possibly the west coast , for some surfing. Kinda fly by the seat of my pants and get a hotel wherever I end up. I had no idea March was the busiest month. Is it worth it to come to Culebra or is it normally overcrowded during that time frame (early March)? Thanks again for the info.

The crowded times on Culebra pretty much matche other "beachy" locations like Fort Lauderdale, Daytona, etc.: Holiday weekends, spring break, Easter, Thanksgiving, New Year's, etc.

Summer tends not to be QUITE as crowded as spring.

The best times to go if you want no crowds are Sept through early December (except for holidays).

Other than the fall, Culebra is a BAD choice for "seat of your pants" travel. There just aren't that many lodging facilities on the island, so there isn't much of a safety margin. You might easily find yourself without an available place to stay.

Is that to say that Culebra will be very crowded like the locations above? If so will it be worth the time and effort? The main reason I wanted to go to Culebra was to get away from it all. If the beaches will be super crowded I might decide to hit up some other part of the island. I don't mind a little partying (actually still party a bit) but I'm not looking for a spring break blowout type party. Sorry for all the questions and thanks for the help.

Good afternoon,
Culebra never gets "Daytona" like. Even on holiday weekends, the month of July (which is VERY busy in Culebra), & other peak times you can still find a beach to yourself or with 10 as a crowd.

As noted above, the accomodations are limited, so planning ahead is recommended.

Do they not teach reading comprehension any longer up North?

@ Hillman: Thanks for the a**hole remark. You've been a great help. What did I fail to comprehend?

1st question was about the availability of rooms.
2nd question was related to crowds
3rd question was asking was a follow up to the 2nd (not that I didn't understand as you assume)

I read and comprehended the answer from Mort. He states that Culebra has larger crowds at the same time as other "beachy locations". I wanted to know if the island got as crowded as the locations he listed not when they were crowded. Have you ever been to Ft. Lauderdale for Spring break? if so you will know it is an absolute mad house. I wanted to make sure that it was not like that on Culebra.

So in conclusion maybe you should worry less about my comprehension skills and more about yours.

Let me apologize to everyone as well I did not mean to come off as rude. I cannot stand trolls and the remark was obviously a shot at me. I have never taken kindly to stuff like that. Maybe in time.....

Brian, it's definitely all relative. In Ft Lauderdale and Daytona, the beaches can get far more crowded, but they also have thousands of hotel rooms to accommodate the overflow.

Culebra could NEVER get that crowded simply because there's a limit to how many people can be brought over there by ferries and planes.

For many of us who love Culebra, "getting away from it all" means going when Flamenco might have 20 people on it. Like I said, it's all relative!

If you have a room reserved, you will love Culebra no matter how "crowded" it is. Even at it's most crowded, you can easily get to a beach that has almost no one on it... such as hiking over the hill from Flamenco to Carlos Rosario.

I was just trying to encourage you to not make the trip without knowing you'll have a place to stay. If you go midweek you'll probably be fine without a reservation, but it's a risk. And weekends in high season are a big risk.

Brian,

If you start off on this foot, by calling a dedicated and long-time member of this forum a name, you are probably not going to be very well received in Culebra. Perhaps you should stick to the main island.

If you do your research on the size of Culebra relative to the size of Daytona, and add in the lack of infrastructure needed to get that many people to Culebra, you would understand that the crowds are relatively small compared to Daytona.

Really? I was actually in the process of during my research Debbie. That is why I am posting.

I'm sorry if Hillman is a long time member but he took a shot at me with the comprehension remark. I totally understand that Culebra cannot support the number of people Daytona can. Mort kindly informed me that Culebra was busy at the time of my visit by stating:

"The crowded times on Culebra pretty much match other "beachy" locations like Fort Lauderdale, Daytona, etc.: Holiday weekends, spring break, Easter, Thanksgiving, New Year's, etc."

I have been to both Daytona and Fort Lauderdale during spring break and it was a mad house. Maybe my question(response) wasn't clear, I simply wanted to know if it was crazy overcrowded like that. No rooms, people everywhere, etc...
If that was the case I was going to stay on the main island as you suggest. However palmettocalebra answered my question perfectly. The idea of crowded is way different in Puerto Rico. To share the beach with 10,20 heck 100 people is no prob, 1,000 people......not so much. I have never been to the Caribbean so I am sorry if my question was dumb but now I know.

The response was a little harsh and I did apologize for that. Do you believe Hillman's response to be nice?

"Do they not teach reading comprehension any longer up North?"

A little bit rude don't you think? I did not call Hillman any names at all I said it was an a-hole remark. Which I still believe to be true.

I am sorry for my snippy response and for not being more clear with my question. I simply needed a little more clarification not a sarcastic shot at me. I felt that Hillman did not comprehend my question and my comprehension skills were not at fault but his were.

After reading Morks post I can see he also thought I was asking if there will be that many people on Calebra (as in Daytona).

I apologize for my unclear question.

Brian

I have to side with Brian on this one. I don't think he asked any unreasonable questions, and I wasn't completely clear in my first response.

And I think that Brian proved that he does indeed have good reading comprehension because he picked up Hillman's meaning right off the bat. Case closed. (smile)

Thank you Mort.

With just 6 posts I have offended a" long time and dedicated member"(although 35 posts does not seem that dedicated to me) made fun of, and been told to stay on the main island. Geez....... pretty tough forum......LOL I'm just joking around

But seriously thanks everyone for your help. I have been all over the world In my past travels I have always just got there and then worried with the particulars. Not this time! I am in the process of trying to make reservations and save myself some trouble and $$. Something I would have never done this if it were not for you guys. I appreciate the heads up.
