Birding Culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Amy Butler (---.silicondairy.net)

Hello! My family and I will be visiting Culebra the first week of March. I am an avid birder and teacher/naturalist here in the Northeast of New England and I am looking forward to exploring all that Culebra has to offer. I am particularly interested in finding a local naturalist who would be willing to act as a guide,..? Does anyone have any suggestions? Literature that I could get before hand on Culebra's ecosystems would be great too!

If you don't hook up with a naturalist, I can offer a couple hints.
-"The Birds of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands" is the guide to use.
-If you put out a saucer of sugar water, you will likely attract Puerto Rican Hummingbirds and Bananaquits.
-If you see large gatherings of terns or boobies on the water, or pelicans diving, the snorkling is bound to be killer there, too, but you knew that...
-Great birding in the lagoons behind the north coast beaches. Flamenco's lagoon is easily accessible by the back road to the shark pens (ask a local)
-While enjoying the soaring frigates and pelicans, keep an eye peeled for red tailed hawks and ospreys.

Hola! You may want to check out the Culebra newspaper, http://theculebracalendaronline.com/
It has a chart of the Seabirds and Winter birds. It can be found on the left column. There is also info about what can be found in the Culebra Wildlife Refuge. You might want to call their number and found out if you can get a guide or any other info. There is also other info and contact numbers in the paper, a good resource for any visitor. Happy travels! Good call, Jeannie. I'd forgotten about that resource. Very cool.

Amy,
I'm also a birder and will be going to Culebra in May. I'd appreciate if you pass along any info you gain before and after our trip.

Hola! I forgot to mention that on page 20 of the December 2008 edition of the Culebra Island Newspaper: http://theculebracalendaronline.com/, there is also additional info regarding the Los Canos del Bruley Bird Santuary at the US Fish and Wildlife Reserve (Culebra Reserve) and the map with its' location. It also says that you can contact a local operator for a tour. Post pics of your bird sightings, we would love to see some. Happy travels! J

Do we need our wetsuits to snorkel?? No

What is the warmest thing we need to bring to wear at night? A light sweater in case the winds are blowing hard, but it's usually pretty warm in town.

Do we need jeans for anything?? Only if you get chilly at night if the wind is blowing.

Best Beach Access snorkeling?? We will have a jeep... Melones

Can we rent umbrellas/chairs etc still at Flamenco? Yes

Happy Diving!
Debbie

I'd like to commend the entire board for our restraint when Doug wrote: "If you see large gatherings of terns and boobies on the water...".

Suffice to say, it's a good idea to bring binoculars.

Just a quick thank you to all of you who responded to my birding questions! I have some connections to make when I get to the island and look forward to enjoying your home.
If anyone else has anything to add about flora or fauna, I would greatly appreciate it!
Best from Snowy Vermont,
Amy

Hi. Contrary to the opinions of those who posted earlier, I wear a wetsuit top every time, i haven't swum once in these waters (the last 10 weeks) for any prolonged period without my top. At night, eating out you might appreciate a linen shirt, some sort of cover-up. And finally, i think the best snorkeling via jeep is at Tamarindo, precisely the point between the big bay and Tamarindo Estates. Far out around the big white buoys. You will see it ALL. have fun!!

While he isn't an official naturalist (whatever that might mean), Chris Goldmark is doing bird sighting tours by water and it sounds like it's been going well with happy birders.

This is his fly fishing website that can be used for a contact:

Stop in at Excetera your first day and chat with Nadine, the owner. She is a bigtime birder. i saw a notice on her counter yesterday about an upcoming birding excursion.

Doug mentioned earlier about the book -"The Birds of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands" as the guide to use. I will second that: we took it along this past trip and it was a fabulous resource.
