Food Shopping Advice Needed!
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello we are so excited about our trip coming up in just 2 weeks! We are staying over Zoni Beach and will probably want to be relatively quiet (seeing we are leaving 5 kids and various extensions behind) but will want to check some "island culture" out. Are there any Advent (pre-Christmas) events going on or anything else we might be interested in experiencing to make our island vacation complete? We plan on beach exploring and snorkeling every day... I'll take suggestions for that too...

We are pretty capable as far as cooking (large family) and prefer staying in (cocktails, too) to enjoy our place and it's view , so as far as provisions are some places better than others. We are "experienced" with island life and the limited provisions (2x Virgin Gorda) it can provide especially compared to the US's "over abundance" Are there fresh markets? or a farmer to go to for fresh chicken or other meat/ produce? How about spirits, where best to procure these? Thanks for any suggestions and anything else you want to add.

I think that bagging roosters would get strong support!

At Milka's they used to have Argentinian meats. VERY good and fresh - I even had them grind it for me on the spot and had it as tartare. Very good quality. The chickens - I second Mort and Richard :)

Enjoy Culebra!

Thanks All for the chicken advice. How about the procurement of spirits (gin/vodka) and is there anything on the calendar of events while we are in town (12/6-12/13)? Lastly, best snorkeling spots without chartering a boat?

El Eden has a good selection of wine and spirits, and some at Pandeli. Best snorkeling is done at Melones, Carlos Rosario (hike from Flamenco) and the island of Culebrita. I wouldn't worry too much about procuring food, and I wouldn't bring anything with you. It's $45 per person for a day boat trip to Culebrita, pack a lunch and enjoy. Sometimes there is a fresh veggie market down by the dock (you can get fish there too) but you can ask around when you get there. Have a great time!

Milka has spirits, as does Lilly's at the ferry dock. You won't have any trouble provisioning food or drink, although we haven't always been able to say that.

Bosie - what veggie mart by the dock? Is that new?

Happy Diving!
Debbie

You may certainly bring your own food, but I always like to give my business to the locals. I do pack tea bags, Splenda and little things like that. We had no trouble finding groceries. We got our meats from Milka and El Eden had some nice frozen meats as well as liquor. With the price of checking luggage now, I am not sure it would be financially advantageous, at least to me, to bring my own food/liquor. I was not shocked, at all, in the grocery selections (except maybe produce) I found on Culebra. Have a great time.

Buy Culebrense!

If you bring your own food, what is the incentive for the shopkeeper to stock that special yoghurt? And then he might not carry that 'basic' item anymore either, that you forgot ...

Enjoy Culebra!

Thank you Vicki and Michael, I gotcha on that one. We should be buying local and supporting the economy of Culebra. Thanks for the reminder...

Debbie, I was referring to the veggie truck or whatever it is that sometimes shows up and sells MJ a cauliflour once in a blue moon. I don't think there is a set schedule.

The fruit/veggie guy comes every Friday, except this week when he is coming Weds. due to the Thanksgiving day holiday.

He was setting up on the corner by Carlos Jeeps & then for the last month or so was in town by the not-open new Alcaldia building. But since they are now doing road work there (the reason for his initial move) he's back to the intersection by Carlos & the airport.

It's the cauliflower that is blue moon, not the veggie guy - he's been amazing...it took us quite awhile to believe he would keep on coming over, but indeed he does, with all his lovely produce. We're so lucky!

the veggie guy, is he only there on Fridays? We arrive on Saturday and depart on Saturday. That won't get us any veggies. Is there somewhere else that might have a decent selection of something?

For things you can't get on Culebra (well dry goods) you can just do a flat rate box shipped general delivery to the post office. We did this last year and it worked out great - just pad the time for it to get there. You should also write your cell phone number on the side I am told.
