Coming to Culebra soon
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Looks like MJ would be the one to answer my questions. Looking forward to meeting you. I lived on Vieques for a couple of years back in the 70s (USMC, Camp Garcia). I always loved the islands. I've been to St Thomas several times since. I am selling the family Chevy store this month. Tired of feeding the money cow. When this deal is done I am hauling a##. Culebra is my destination. I may stay a month or longer. I am looking for very inexpensive accomidations.( the business sold at a very big loss). If I just show up with out any reservations sometime in December will I be able to find a place to lay my head. I am throwing away my schedule, my cell phone and my watch. I dont like to travel with much cash but being there for that lenght of time I will need a little. Is there a local bank where i can transfer some funds or deposit a cashiers check or does some one have a suggestion. I am traveling alone (just rapping up my 3rd divorce). I am looking for an oppertunity to regroup and figure out what to do with the rest of my life. (any job openings in the area ha). Thanks in advance for the info. Dana

Dana, I'm not MJ, though we have striking similarities (mainly a very strange sense of humor). She will surely answer your questions.

I just want to say that you are going to the right place at the right time in your life, for all the reasons you mentioned.

The earlier you go in December, the better, because you'll have lots of options and you'll have time to scout around and make some connections so that you are well settled in to an inexpensive place before the jam-packed holiday season starts.

Best of luck to you. I have to warn you, though... more than a few people have come to Culebra for a month and ended up staying far longer!

Dana, thanks for the vote of confidence but please note that this forum is FULL of people who do a lot better job than I do at answering questions pertaining to so many things Culebra! I'm sort of the side show to the main event, answering if I can (or if I get around to it) but I don't have nearly the patience of the wonderful info gatherers and distributors that do the hard work!

The cheapest way I know to stay here is to camp and it's beautiful. The holidays increase the number of people there, but you can't beat it for the price, along with the kiosko food you'll find there - great prices, great food.

There is a local bank here, BancoPopular. I'm sure they'd be happy to help you out if they can; super nice people. I don't have any idea how it works with temporary visitors, so maybe you should just call them and ask before arriving? There is only one bank here, so finding the number should be simple.

Lots of people come to Culebra to take a life time out...it can be a good thing if you remember why you're here ;) Good luck!

Added note: Ok, the rest of you chime in...I'm sure there are some of you who have stayed that length of time on a budget, how did it work for you?

I would like to second MJ's advice about the campground.

When I was there with my family for ten nights last January, our next door neighbor was a guy who had been there for several months. Needless to say, he had the best campsite in the whole place... gorgeous.

A hundred yards away, another guy had been there for a month and a half (so far).

In the next section, there was a woman who had been there for two months and does it annually.

It's $20 per tent per night. If you're 60, it's $10 per night. If you can convince them that you're a local or are moving there, the local rate is $10 per night.

If you don't mind "roughing it" a little, you simply can not find a more beautiful, relaxing, restoring place to be.

And it's remarkably convenient. You can catch publicos into town and back for $2 a trip.

But be prepared for some crowds in the campground during the holiday period, which ends around Jan 6 or so (there's a local holiday around then).

But there's a section at the very end, Section E, that tends to be a lot quieter than the others. Definitely go down to that section.

Dana, don't worry - all will be fine and you will find a place not only for your head :)

Flamenco is the place to start out. It gives one the right perspective. Tending bar or such can give you some cash, so you don't deplete the kitty.

Forget trying to set things up in advance. Face to face you will get way further. A lot people do not check their email or even have an address. And that's a good thing :)

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael
