How many are in your party? If only a couple, you might want to condider flying out of IG. It is a $20 cab fare to get there. We flew out of Isla Grande on the way there and took the ferry on the way back and were picked up by Henry and taken to SJU. If not for all the diving equipment we took with us, we would have flown back to IG, but we had to pay way too much for extra luggage

Take the airport bus to the bus Terminal then get the
next Publico (taxi Van) to Fajardo Port, Costs less
than 6.00 You probably won't make the afternoon
ferry sp you wait for the 7:00 one if its running, if
it isn't, then you stay at the Fajardo Inn, $110.00 and
get a taxi in the morning. After dinner, breakfest and
the taxi you'll spend another 100.00 but at least
you had some fun. Me and my girlfriend did it once
and that's the way it turned out. Take the taxi or fly

Mike, the ferry vs. flying to Culebra is one of those things that has been discussed over and over. Many people want to experience the ferry boat ride as a lovely way to ease on over to Culebra. There are others who just can't wait and opt to fly to Culebra, usually out of Isla Grande airport. Either way, you might save $10 or so by flying...and you get to Culebra faster. It's really up to you. I hear that taking the airport bus and then stopping to catch a publico to Fajardo sometimes can take up to four hours.

Hola! I researched this not too long ago. Taking vans/publicos all the way from the San Juan airport to Rio Piedras to Fajardo is very cheap, especially now since the AMA, the public bus transportation is free until the end of the year. I would stop at the Tourism office at the San Juan Airport to find out which AMA buses you have to take to get to Rio Peidras. These sometimes change bus numbers and routes. Here is what I found out at the Airport Tourism office:

"Public transportation all the way will take you hours to arrive to Fajardo, but may be cheap. Once you arrive at the Luis Munoz Marin airport, go to the second floor to PARADAS to take the AMA or bus B-40 (this is what may have changed; consult either the personnel at the Tourism office or the people at AMA bus stop to find out the bus you have to board) to Rio Piedras terminal. Fare is 75 cents (fare is now free until the end of the year). The bus is very cheap but somewhat unreliable. They go on strike every other week. At the Rio Piedras terminal, take a publico to Fajardo (Pueblo). Fare is between $20-25, maybe less. Once you're in the town of Fajardo, take another publico to the pier, fare will be $10 or less. There might be a direct publico between Rio Piedras terminal to the Fajardo pier, ask. These fares depend on gas prices which is almost 80 cents/liter, very high (gas prices have changed). Then ferry to Culebra, $2.25 one way, about 1 1/2 hour trip may be more depending on sea conditions. Less than $40 for the trip to Culebra."

Good luck. Let us know of your adventures. Happy travels! J

Wow, that's a lot of work to go through to save $25 each way. Not only does it take an extra couple hours (or more) but you have to lug all your bags from vehicle to vehicle.

Jeannie, thanks for the research. I hope your post can be highlighted somehow because this question comes up regularly.

Michael, is it possible to link to this info or include it somehow on the Transport page?

Hola! It is a lot of work, especially if you have many bags in tow. However, in speaking with the people form the Puerto Rico Tourism office at the airport, they do receive quite a number of backpackers who don't mind the trek with their stuff and are looking for a different sense of adventure. If you want to mix with the locals, practice your Spanish, and experience the culture of the island, then going the long way is for you. If you have too much stuff, want to get to Culebra ASAP, then book John's publico to Fajardo and share the ride with others to save some bucks, and ferry over OR fly from one airport to the other. Happy travels! J
