Culebra Trip Report Oct 18th – 26th

My husband and I just got back from our 2nd trip to Culebra and I thought I would share some info….

Transportation – We took the ferry this year instead of flying from Isla Grande. We used John’s Publico for our transportation to and from Fajardo. He was awesome! On time both ways, very friendly, spoke excellent English, which helps because I speak very little. He even stopped at the roadside stands for us to get an authentic Puerto Rican snack! The ferry was nice, very cheap, which is great. Since it was off season there were no lines so it was quick and easy both ways. In Culebra we rented from Jerry for the 2nd time and just like before everything went smoothly. Jerry is a character, he always makes me laugh. His jeeps work great and his prices are very nice. If you are looking for something new and fancy he’s not your guy, but if you just want something to get you around then he is perfect!

Guesthouse – We stayed at the Palmetto, which was awesome! I can not say enough good things about this guesthouse. Terrie and Mark are the owners and live on site. They are the greatest hosts ever! The guesthouse consists of five rooms, a living room, and two kitchens. It was nice having the kitchens to make meals and the living room was nice as well, we watched a couple of movies at night. For the price and location it can’t be beat! We loved it and will for sure stay there again!

Food – Because it was off season a few things were closed, but everything else was good. We got groceries at a couple of different places. They all seem to have similar selections and price. We ate breakfast and lunch mostly at home, which I recommend if possible, there aren’t too many places open for lunch. We did have breakfast at Pandeli one morning which was tasty as usual. We also had lunch at Dingy Dock. Dingy Dock for me isn’t that great. I like the fact that you get to sit out by the water and enjoy Culebra, but the food and prices aren’t that attractive, but I will always go there once or twice. Barbara Rosas is one of my favorites. Good food, great price! I also like how laid back it is, very relaxing! Heathers pizza is always another hit. Yummy!

Beaches – We went to almost all the beaches and they were all great. The trails on Culebrita were pretty overgrown. We walked to the lighthouse and to both beaches. We took home some nice battle scars from all the brush scrapping us up. The trails to Brava and Resaca were also a little more difficult due to all the rain, everything has grown so much. Zoni has lost quite a bit of beach, but if you walk to the left it is nice. Flamenco was great as usual, nice waves when we were there made for a lot of fun. Carlos Rosario was too rough to snorkel the day we hiked over. Melones was the best snorkeling we had while there.

I finally got to meet the famous MJ (island woman cart) on the last day we were there. I bought some hot sauce, can’t wait to try it!

Overall we had a great trip. Already planning our return! Culebra is a very special place, can’t wait to go back!

Kerry, what time are you arriving at San Juan? We also are coming on the 5th of November.....our flight gets in at 2pm, and we are planning to catch a ride with Johns Publico. We could share the trip cost to Fajardo if that works out for you. We are a party of 3.

Yeah, he usually charges by the trip....$65. We usually give him a tip, so if you can kick in $20 we'll cover the rest of it. Saves us a little, saves you a lot. We get in on Jet Blue at 2pm. I've got an email in to him to ask him if we can all go as group....actually we kind of have to since we're coming in at the same time.

kerry.....did you book our flights? lol. We're coming back to the main island on the same day....we too have an early flight out on the 12th....will be staying in old san juan on the 11th, although I think we were considering coming back on the ferry earlier in the day than you were so we could have some time in the old city. We can talk about it on the trip to Fajardo :-)

Whatever. This place is in the barrio located next to the municipal gym where kids are playing games and making lots of noise, which is perfectly fine. No breeze whatsover, only view is of rundown houses, far from everything. Got me off the ferry with slick advertising. Your better off camping. CulebraLover wrote:

Folks, this is what we call a "troll" in the internet world. Tell you what "Tweer" ... post your real name, your real e-mail address and a phone number where you can be reached and then maybe we can take your opinion seriously.

I would love to know where on Culebra you can "stay on the water with a pool" ... unless you consider the ocean waters your personal pool. Palmetto Guest House is in a local neighborhood in Culebra. It's where people LIVE for cryin' out loud ... your comments are demeaning to the people of Culebra and uncalled for.

I have read enough positive reviews from REAL people about Palmetto Guest House to let one negative review from a NOT-SO-REAL person mean a thing.

Frank
