Camping...
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi, all...

Ok, 2 camping questions...

1. Do llamas... never mind. We will be camping November 4 through some day. Are the Kiosks going to be open if we are possibly the only ones there?

2. If you have camped on Flamenco, do you camp on the sand, or is it rocks or grass? Visited once, never camped.

Thanks in Advance!
Gene.

You camp in sand, with a little grass mixed in there.... Pretty sweet, too. I have no idea about the kiosks though....

Have fun

1) Kiosks during the low season (which is when you're camping) may not be open very often. I would not count on weekdays...
2) For camping at Flamenco, good sleeping pads are needed. At the campsites, the sand is packed very hard, it is almost like pavement. You may also encounter roots/rocks where the tent sites are located. Camping is not allowed directly on the beach.
3) I am planning to camp there in mid-October. I may be able to give you some camping updates after I get back (late October). I am rather concerned about mosquito levels, due to all the rain (8-inches+) they've had the last 4 days. I've heard it can be brutal after an event like that. Ug!

Mosquitos (in town and the barrios) were VICIOUS this past weekend. :( Didn't get out to the beach because of the rain.

Happy Diving!

Anyone know if Flamenco is open for camping? I heard it would be closed for a while because of the storms.... Any idea?

Flamenco is open for camping. The island was completely unaffected by Omar.

Ok. Thanks.

I know Omar missed you guys, but someone had told me that the campground was closed even before Omar... Thanks, Terrie! :)

There's not much reason to close the campground for an extended period after a major storm. There's VERY little infrastructure there. So recovering from a storm would mainly be just to clean things up a bit.

I imagine that it's "closed" when a hurricane is going to hit it, but no one in their right mind would stay in a tent during a hurricane anyway. Maybe they have to officially close it at those times because not all people are in their right mind. (I can name two such campers I met in my last trip! LOL.)

Culebra knows that they can't open and close the campground on a whim because so many people arrive there every day to camp and they've made their plans way in advance. There's really no way for them to know that it's closed. It would be terrible PR for Culebra if people were to arrive with all their stuff only to find a closed campground.
