Camping at Christmas
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi everyone! I love your forum and have been a lurker for some time. You all inspired me to take a detour from my camping trip around Puerto Rico with your tantalizing tidbits about laid back atmosphere, tourist trap free unspoiled caribbean beauty, and best of all a campground!

I have now booked a trip to return at Christmas for a whole week ( not like last time 2 days that turned into 4 'cause I didn't want to leave and go back to finish my round the Island tour... sigh )....... so I have a few questions for you......

1. Can I buy camp stove fuel anywhere on the Island?

2. When should I have my rental booked by? (golf cart preferably, suited us just fine last time) Who is the best place to rent from?

4. Is M.J's cart open during Christmas week? Gotta get me a bunch of hot sauce......

5. Is anything open Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?

6. How hard do you think finding a site in section E of Flamenco will be? Arriving on the last ferry on the 23.

7. Are the concession stands at Flamenco opened during Christmas week?

I think that's it..... for now anyway! LOL

Can't wait to come back. My husband and I loved Culebra so much that we are breaking two of our traveling rules, never go to the same place twice, and never take the kids on our international camping jaunts!

I would doubt the Flamenco kiosks are open Xmas day as they weren't one New Year's day I was - places in town were, but Ano Nuevo (sp) is much more secular so it may not be an apt comparison.

Most restaurants have been closed on Christmas day. We had a big dinner & invited our guests to share as there weren't many options & it's fun to have lots of people dining & chatting together for the holidays!

Call the Flamenco Campground Office at 787-742-0700 or the Culebra Conservation and Development Authority at 787-742-3880. They speak English.

My wife and I will be down there the same time as you guys, do you know if the ferry will be open on the 24th? And what did you find out about the camping fuel? Do you think the camp ground will be crowded this time of year?

Happy Camping!

Culebra is surely like most places... closing early on Christmas Eve and all of Christmas Day.

There may be food kiosk vendors at Flamenco if there are crowds of people. But since these are private individuals who appear/disappear at their own whim, you can't count on any of them being there on Christmas day.

Same with restaurants... you won't know until you arrive and ask, and even then they might change their mind at the last minute. Places like Dingy Dock and Mamacita's are the most likely to be open.

Moral of the story... Buy your food early on Dec 24th and buy enough to keep you from going hungry on the 25th, just in case.

As for the rest of the days during that holiday period... no worries because it's high tourist season and there's money to be made by servicing everyone. So there will be plenty of action.

As for camping fuel... there are several grocery stores that carry it. And there's often a kiosk open at Flamenco that carries fuel, ice and other cool stuff. That kiosk is usually only open Fri thru Sun, though, but sometimes more often during holiday weeks.

As for camping reservations... They aren't worth much, even if you're able to reach the office. The campground is pretty much first come first served, and they ALWAYS fit people in. A friend of mine was there on Easter and said you could not even walk without stepping on a tent.

I'll be open and hopefully there will be plenty of hot sauce. I did just get an invite to go to NC for Christmas, but most likely that will not turn out to be a reality. Too much fun going on here at Christmas to leave. Lots of places close on Christmas Day so the advice to buy what you like is a good one. I never can remember who IS open on Christmas day but it's either Dinghy Dock or Mamacita's, they trade out holidays, one open one closed. I'll try to find out more (like, will Susie be open? El Batey? etc) as we get closer to Christmas, which feels like about a year from now at the moment.

Dinghy dock had a real spread buffet style last year on Christmas Day. Not super pricey. Club Seaborne is always open if you want to spend a lotta money. I've never seen camp fuel at any of the stores. Last few years the kiosks have been serving on Christmas day, but are not at all dependable, so I wouldnt' count on it. Christmas isn't a super big Puerto Rican holiday. Three Kings Day is when everything is really closed. Ferry is usually pretty packed tho' so get there early to get your tickets!

We love to rent from Jerry. Nice guy, tons of info. He'll steer you right but book NOW. MJ's there and open sporadically mostly in the mornings! Love the Island Woman!

Just a bit of some, maybe, clarification. I've seen gas stove and fuel at Superette Mayra's, and I'm sure that's not the only place. You can't take it on the ferry, fuel, that is. Legally anyway. Get it here.
