Spring Break
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I'm planning a trip to Culebra that will coincide with spring break. A previous post stated that students from Puerto Rico invade the island during this time of year. We wanted to visit because it seems like a very quiet and isolated island, but are concerned now that it will be packed with kids going for spring break. Has anybody visited during this time? What was it like? Thanks!

Dan

My friend, if you are looking for fun and a WILD trip (like those on the old movies National Lampoons, Porkys, etc.) come on spring break and stay at the beach.

If you want to enjoy a quiet place and a real tropical island wait at least 2 weeks after spring break or come a few weeks before spring break..............

Spring break is not the best time to visit Culebra.

Oh, also...Roberto...some of the owners of the guest houses told me Easter week this year basically starts on April 2nd and ends on April 11th. I was also told to fly during this time because the ferries take forever to load and unload.

You heard right. Culebra definitely gets invaded during Spring break. PR's college break may not coiincide with yours but if it does prepare yourself for rowdy full ferry rides, and drunken but cute youngsters out on the beach at all hours of the night. Still, compared to most other places Culebra will seem pristine, even then. The college kids hang predominately by the campgrounds. If you're staying somewhere else you may not see them much. They come with all their supplies (in coolers) so you may not even run into them in town.

So, when exactly is spring break? I also plan on visiting Culebra the week of March 29th and camping at Flamenco Beach. Will there be a problem with finding a campsite? Do I need to request a permit?
Gracias from Michigan
Consuelo

We are looking at planning a vacation to Culebra April 16 to April 27th. My boys are 17 and 14 so want to be sure there's enough activity for them! They like to surf and sail - are these activities available? Also tennis - are there tennis courts?
Thank you!
Diane

Hi,

Semana Santa also considered spring break for most schools in Puerto Rico, is from Monday 5th of April through Sunday 11th. Friday the 9th being 'Good Friday' or 'Viernes Santo'. The weekend before this is usually part of the excitement.

Enjoy!

Melanie

Spring Break on Puerto Rico starts, on April 5 and it last a week, so from there the best days to go to Culebra, will be on mid April or May.

Last year 2003 our family vacationed on Culebra during Easter Week—this is considered Spring Break for most college kids in Puerto Rico. We a family of five also traveled with good friends a family of six, so combined there were six teenagers all between the ages of 18-20. We arrived on a Sunday and totally enjoyed the first few days in serene and tranquil contentment, I must mention contrary to popular opinion, our teens did not find the island boring but enchanting and loved every minute they were there. Our days consisted of snorkeling, swimming and of course sun bathing and though there were no evening activities in Culebra, we made due with board games and fishing along the pier. With our days full, we happily went to sleep enjoying the sounds of the ocean and excited to welcome the next day in paradise, until Wednesday morning that is. On Wednesday morning we woke to what looked like a military invasion! I kid you not—Sometime during the wee hours of the morning, our sweet little island metamorphosed to what appeared as downtown Baghdad. The plaza, where the ferry docks, was completely taking over by Puerto Rico’s military. The troops dispatched from San Juan, were all in full camouflage fatigues holding automatic weapons waiting to greet the ferry passengers. Along with the military were police personal in bullet proof vest, helmets and complete riot gear. Then as the ferry approached, the road coming into the Plaza was quickly closed and the police Canine units were dispatched. You can imagine the look on our faces not knowing what was happening but totally sure we were in some kind of terrible danger or possibly some kind of military coop. The scene quite frankly compared to the news coverage we see of third world countries. We frightened out of our mind asked the police what was happening. He told us they were making inspections for drugs. This unfortunately went on the rest of the week. So if you are planning to go there during Spring Break beware you will be greeted by the military and the canine unit. Unfortunately we were extremely anxious wondering if something else was going on because the scene was the same everyday. Our two families decided to leave on Friday which worked out for us because it rained the whole weekend. I would not suggest traveling to Culebra during the military occupation.
