Can a group of 7 get along without a rental car?

My extended family of 7 is camping for 10 nights at Flamenco.

I was thinking of renting a car for us, but that's nearly $100 per day all told. Do publicos run fairly often to and from Flamenco? (Day and evening?)

Is it realistic for us to use them for grocery shopping, errands, dinner in town, etc.?

Seems like at $1 or $2 per person each way, it's a lot cheaper than renting a car.

Anyone familiar with the publicos and taxis? Thanks!

Not to try to answer your question but to give you a couple points to consider:

1. There are some spectacular beaches that aren't very accessible by public transportation. It might work to rent for a couple days to visit those beaches.

2. If you have a car with a hardtop, you have a place to lock up valuables. I believe Culebra is one of the least risky places in the world for crime, but it isn't totally risk-free. It'd be a flat out bummer to lose your cash or camera.

Hope this helps with your decision.

Is that you JM?

I wasn't with a group 7 of when I camped for 21 days - however the publicos worked fine for getting around.

I say, pace yourself, plan well; fear not. One time I carefully removed $100 from my "buried cache" of funds - went off to the kiosk for stuff-on-a stick. Much to my chagrin, my stash was lying at the entrance of my unzipped tent when I returned several hours later. Of course I angerly, with fright on my face - looked around to see who might have done such a thing!!!

Doug, thanks for that good advice. Very good points.

Ruth, it is indeed me! How hard (or easy) is it to get a publico when you need one? Do they run regularly?

I had to laugh at your last sentence. It's amazing how often I misplace something and my first thought is usually "Who took it!". I should have learned by now that it's almost always... me.

There seems to be a rhythm as to when runs are made. One of the kiosk family groups has a licensed van and a couple of drivers who take turns. It seemed that if there was urgency to get to town, one of that group of folks was willing to drive. But then, how urgent can things get when it's island time happening?

We sometimes were aided by Felix who works at the campground parking lot to help us access properly licensed drivers/publicos. I hope he's still there.

If you have a cell phone, you can call someone whose card has been given to you coming either from the airport or from the ferry. Ask your initial driver for their card, then call them from time to time to establish rapport.

Perhaps someone else who is reading can jump in here with more information?
