Culebra, Puerto Rico

We have been to Culabrita several times but never to Luis Pena. Is Luis Pena worth seeing and is there good snorkeling there? Also, could we kyack over or would it be to far? Thanks,
Tricia

There is no such thing as a bad vacation. Some are just better than others.

The snorkeling off of Luis Pena is great and best accessed by kayak to small, beautiful beaches. You can kayak from tamarindo to Luis Pena, but there is a strong current you have to account for. Jim Peterson is the best guide to kayaking. I think you can still find him at Barbra Rosa's.

ok I have to ask: why the heck are there are so many STL people here?

(no offense, former resident myself/curious and no I'm not gonna ask what HS you went to)

but there does seem to be a lot of ISP's from around there.

Isn't that one of those *obvious* answer questions? If you were from St. Louis, wouldn't you want to come to Culebra (yes, Doug, I'll buy the first drink)?

I used to work with Doug and thats how I found out about it. I know Doug knows quite a few people in this area so he may be to blame =P
That is a good question though Richard...not sure why. Doug is the only person I have met that has any idea where or what Culebra is. Dont tell anyone Richard but I didnt go to high school here...thank god! Other places Ive lived, in cronological order, have included Louisiana (Lafayette/Baton Rouge), Houston, Hong Kong, California (Bay Area), North Carolina (Charlotte, Boone GO ASU!!!), finally Misery (St. Louis). NC by far my favorite and where I hope to retire and hit the trout streams all day.

There are only a few of us, Richard. When my best friend moved to San Juan and I came to visit, we came over for 3 days. Now he and his wife live there. My largest sin was bringing my buddy the travel writer down. http://www.puertorico-herald.org/issues/2002/vol6n34/AllsQuietCuleb-en.html . I have also spent a few vacations with other friends from StL here. Ty was looking for a quiet beach on which to honeymoon and asked me why I continued to visit Culebra. Jane Anton got here on her own...

I didn't mean to make a big deal out of it, just you know, compared to Cleveland or Salt Lake, it just seemed sorta disproportionate

No...it's interesting! When I first got online, before there was a WWW anything and we were communicating using a system that you had to code in, after about 9 months someone said, how come most of the people here are Jewish? He knew that from our holiday greetings, things like that (and those five or so from Israel might have been a clue). Probably out of 40 or 50 people, 85% were Jewish (some religious, some nowhere near). We came up with lots of reasons, maybe even some valid ones. But it was interesting!

Actually, the St Louis connection goes back a long way. Some biologists from Washington University found it while doing research in the 1970's, before the Navy was kicked off. They were actually part of that effort. They were, also, responsible for the buildings at Punta Aloe. (now called something else I believe) I believe Jerry of Jerry's Jeeps lived here for 13 or 14 years. I discovered it when I was teaching at Wash. U.,j ust before Hurricane Hugo hit. I haven't been back for quite a few years. I have taken a lot of people from St. Louis to Culebra. All have loved it, but only a few get truly hooked. We have, of course, tried to keep it a secret. Descriptions of the plane landing usually worked. But then there was this article in the Post-Dispatch. Now I know who to blame!I'll be back on Dec 18th. I love being there for the Winter Solstice so the days are getting longer when I return. Makes Winter in St Louis bearable.

Pam,

Mea culpa on the article. I've been friends and traveling buddies with you-know-who since well before he snagged the travel beat at the P-D. I'll be flying in on the 28th. If you're still in the vicinity, perhaps we'll meet.

Doug

Doug and his "big mouth" can take credit for me also. I'll be there Jan 28-Feb 8. Actually, I don't really know how big his mouth is, because we have never met.....never mind...shut up Herb. I got to stop talking to myself like this.

Actually Doug has been a big help to me in planning this adventure in paradise.

I don't remember a Culebra article in the P-D, but I do vaguely remember an article on Viques last winter....I think......

Jerry from North County....wonder if he knows "Radio" Rich Dalton?

Go Rams!!!doh.....Go Cards!doh.....Go Mizzou.....YEA

I think Jerry's time in STL left him with mixed feelings. He's a good guy and entitled to his privacy and I don't pry. If you'd like to read the article, cut and paste the URL from my post above into your browser.

Doug, I agree, that's why I've never brought it up with him even though I have relatives in that particular suburb.

besides he has so many interesting things to say on other topics.

Since I'm a newbie I did not realize it would be a sensitive issue. My sincere apologies if I over stepped. Sometimes the "post" button is just too dang big.

Enjoy Culebra!
