Passport to Puerto Rico?

I heard on the news today, if you are going from anywhere in the U.S., continental, Alaska or HI, you would have to have a passport. Will this include PR? This goes into effect Oct. 1. I know PR is a US territory. I have a passport, but husband and kids do not. TIA. Vicki in Tennseess

Hi Vicki,
Good question, in fact friends of my parents traveling to PR weren't sure either. We have recently launched a new site which will hopefully compile all of this type of info. (on Culebra) all in one spot. It is: http://www.culebrablog.com ! The short answer, is nope! No passport necessary for PR!

Thanks for this information. I trust this experience based forum and will continue to come here; why would I need to go elsewhere, to another site?

I do remember in the summer of 1969 that in order to travel to Ketchikan, Alaska, my family (Americans) could not get on the Danish gambling
Alaskan 'state ferry' (that was licensed in Liberia) in Seattle; we hitchhiked overnight to Br. Colombia to book passage to Ketchikan the following day. Travel can be complicated!

State has a fairly good and updated website, although with poor navigation. if you return directly from PR you're ok, but if you have a passport - take it. not all TSA personnel are trained equally.

P.R. is considered part of the U.S. You do not need a passport to enter. This goes for most places in the Carribean, but does not include the Bahamas.

Butch, are you saying, 'most places in the Caribbean are part of the US'?

Enjoy Culebra!

No, Michael, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that you don't need a passport to enter most of the islands in the Caribbean. :) The Bahamas, you will need that passport though!

I would say that depends on how you enter them ... but officially you DO need a passport for all except the ones that are part of the US, which is definitely a minor part.

Enjoy Culebra!

to clarify what I said, if you have complete documentation - use it - security levels change all the time from place to place and given the relative lack of coordination and training within DHS and TSA, save yourself any headaches if you do indeed have a passport. yes you don't "need" it for PR, but it could smooth your path.
