Sail St Thomas to Spanish VI
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I am planning to charter a sailing vessel out of St Thomas and sail the Spanish Virgin Islands. Is it necessary to to check into Customs/Immigration upon arrival into the Spanish VI? If yes, where is the best location of a Customs/Immigration office? Thanks in advance for your help. Uri

It is not necessary. Even though they are called the Spanish V.I., they are U.S. soil, just Like the U.S.V.I.

I hate to contradict you Doug, but it is of the utmost importance to clear with customs when coming from St. Thomas!

You can call them if you only have US citzens aboard. Numbers are posted almost on all dinghy landing places in Culebra.

The customs office is located at the airport and I stronlgy advise you to clear with them first thing when you arrive. No jumping in and enjoying the waters, etc, with your yellow flag up ...

Been there, done that - not a good idea - unless, of course, you can show your papers clearing you out of St. Thomas 4 hrs earlier ;)

Enjoy Culebra!

Also, some charter companies in St. Thomas do not allow their boats to be sailed here. It would be a good idea to check with the company you are chartering with first to find out their policies.

Owlihoot2,

yeah, it took me several hours to convince the guy not to give me a $2000 fine ... we became friends instead :)

Enjoy Culebra!

Now I'm confused. No border is being crossed. Why is a customs event happening?

Doug, part of the reason is that St Thomas is considered a "free port", with tax exempt liquor, etc. When this is brought back into any USA area, it must be declared.

St. Thomas is not only considered a free port, it IS a free port ;) - that's why we like to go there for some Cruzan!

Enjoy Culebra!
