1st Time Visitor

Hey everyone, I have been following this forum for several weeks. I am coming down in early July. I will be coming down with my husband and we don't really know what to expect. Can anyone give us some locations of secluded beaches, how to get there (we are renting a Jeep). I've read that there are water taxis that can take you to even more secluded places. Is that true? First things first though, how do you get from San Juan airport Isla Grande. I believe we are going to fly flamenco air to culebra. Thank you all for any help and insight you can provide.

The easiest way from SJU to Isla Grande is to grab a cab. About 15 minutes, about 15 bucks.

The two beaches you should check out are Resaca and Brava ... look on the forum at the recent thread titled with these beaches for directions. (You must hike to them) Other good ones are Carlos Rosario (hike from the Flamenco parking lot but stay on the trail) and Zoni (it will usually be secluded all the way to the end. Don't miss out on Flamenco Beach, although popular it is still pretty darn nice. A water taxi could take you to Culebrita too.

Resaca and Brava, while secluded, aren't for novice swimmers. Powerful currents and undertow are possible there. Beautiful to look at, difficult to swim.

Carlos Rosario, parts of Tamarindo, Punta Soldado, Zoni's extreme western reach are all places to get away. In addition to the aforementioned Culebrita, there are several nice water-taxi accessable beaches on Cayo Luis Pena.

If you rent yoour jeep from Jerry, you will have a map that not only tells you all you need to know about the island, but may bring a tidy sum at auction - watch Antiques Roadshow for details.

Thank you guys. I would imagine someone can tell me how to get to Zoni by way of Jeep? Doug, i am not following what you're saying about 'tidy sum at auction'. Again thank you for all your help. We are staying at the Villa Fulladoza or Villa Boehme, are there places to eat close by and are there places to have some drinks at night?

I was tossing in a little tongue-in-cheek to brighten things up. Jerry is a terrific resource for first timers. His orientation talk to newbies is a perfect way to learn what's happening on the island as well as find out how to indulge your own favorite activities. He has hand drawn maps, which he customizes according to the things that interest the customer.

It is said that one of his maps went on eBay for $50, which factoid I exaggerated to make my joke about getting rich from a Jerry map!

Welcome to Culebra. This may be your 1st trip, but I'm betting not your last.

My bro and his Merri got the map and the sermon (which I'd never heard, but requested from Jerry and was given, for their listening entertainment) and it is well worthy of eBay or any other *little strange moments* of life award.
Just for a note: it is quiet right now, and if hiking isn't your thing, you can absolutely *get away from it all* on Zoni or Flamenco. And Melones showed them rays, squid, yellowtail, and lots more.
So, while in America or other heavily populated places, the known may be a bummer due to *everyone* being there, the known here is just....good. There really isn't any need to find some place no one knows about because, frankly, everyone here knows about every place and tells someone.
Just be willing to walk a bit and you will find you own place in the sand and sun to say oh wow! (and just a caveat...please take out what you take in...the whole *just leave your footprints* works).

Thank you all for your help. I am not sure who we are renting a Jeep from but it sounds like Jerry is a bit of a trip himself! Are there good places to eat near our accomodations. What about places to have a few drinks. I understand that if we know about a 'secluded' place so do others. I just want a slice of paradise and relaxation. I don't mind sharing.
Do not worry about us, we are by no means litterbugs, what we carry in is what we'll carry out!!

Thank you again eveyone for your help. We are only coming for a short period of time and I want do my best to figure it all out before we get there.

Who would have guessed my friends and I would meet and talk with a team of 'bushwacking' scientists who were looking for a rare type of flora while we were hiking to Resaca? I'm finding joy in the impossibility to suss it all out as the force has it's giving influence in each moment/movement. Light, enjoy.

Zoni in the north shore is the best bet you will enjoy get there trough the nordern most road in the harbor(ensenada ...main harbor, bigest) straigth to th end. Flamenco Beach is a most. Food is scarce in the iland, mean very restrictive opening hours. Mamacitas is the best bar-restaurant in town. closes at 10:00 (the bar).

Paradise is not a place you can look for. Is how you feel for a moment in yor life. Whe you find that moment it will last for ever.

I recommend Dinghy Dock as an excellent dinner choice--or excellent as it gets (Fine dining is not one of Culebra's glories; and there are many glories!). It's on a wharf; the service is friendly and effiecient; the drinks are quite good. We discovered another, small cantina-type restaurant kind of up a little in-town street, but I've forgotten the name, alas.

Anyway, the person who told you that all the beaches are unspoiled is absolutely correct! And what beautiful snorkeling! Ah wildnersness were paradise now, that's Culebra.

By the way "Dewey" (no one calls it that, with good cause) is really small and it gives new meaning to the word unpretentious; but Maya's supermarket is an experience, and the people everywhere are entirely delightful!
