Vegetarian Options
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi, My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Culebra. Could anyone comment on whether it would be difficult for a vegetarian to find a meal there? I don't eat any meat including fish and seafood.
Thanks!

Well, great! All the more fish and meat for us carnivores. All the eating spots I know of will happily accomodate vegetarians if you let them know what you will or will not eat. Good idea, as you wander on your first day, to check out the menus and talk with the wait staff (who may also be the owners) and bartenders at various places; they will steer (as in direct, not steer cow, I swear!) you in the right direction. If you are seriously strict about oils, etc. it would be best to go to the more established places and talk about your requirements.
If you have some sort of special things you really enjoy, I'd suggest bringing it with you as we don't have any health food stores here. Milka's (one of the main markets here) is now selling a number of vegetarian products, and Superette Mayra (the other main market) also have some as well, if you are staying in a place where you can do some cooking on your own.

tostones are good.

w/o naming names, what salad bars there are, are a litttle, well, sad. but listen to MJ and ask.

a few years back someone had similar concerns and reported the Chinese place put shoestring potatoes on top of the veg stir-fry.

if you're cooking at home, and shopping the local stores you have much better choices than even a few years ago.

Even going the rice and beans route, you might want to ask, 'how they make it' since it is not uncustomary to put some lard or bacon in there!

Even the tostones will be fried in the same oil as the fish or the chuleta.

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael
