DEVELOPER DISOBEYS ORDER TO OPEN FLAMENCO BEACH
ACCESS
Culebra, 25 of February of 2006 - the Municipality of
Culebra removed the illegal obstructions that blocked
the accesses to the Flamenco Beach muellecito area and
the old observation post of the Navy (OP). Developer
Victor Gonzalez did not respect the resolution by the
Authority of Conservation and Development of Culebra
(ACDEC) which demanded that both accesses be opened
immediately (January of 2007). Mr. Gonzalez has
challenged the order of the mayor and president of
ACDEC, Hon. Abraham Peña, by blocking again the access
to the muellecito using giant boulders that citizens
of Culebra say are part of an ecologically well-known
sensitive area known as
The Mount Resaca Boulder Forest (U.S. Fish & Wildlife
reference also).
Maricarmen Guilloty, CLAP spokesman said: “The
Municipality opened the access Friday, but today,
Sunday, when we went to the beach the access already
was blocked. And besides blocking our access to the
beach and the OP, the community fears that this
gentleman is destroying our Boulder Forest to use
stones as obstructions. We do we go from here, we do
not have the resources to take to this
megamillonario to court. Meanwhile, our access to the
beach is blocked and the destruction of our patrimony
continues. Is there no justice.
Beaches are ours, Access our right!
