Want to visit Culebra for the first time
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi,

I'm interested in visiting Culebra for the first time for three days with my husband. Was thinking of camping on Flamenco beach.

But I'm not sure if that is the best thing to do. My husband and I haven't had a vacation in a looonngg time so we just want to relax. We're not interested in getting wild, we just want to get a tan, swim, drink, eat and sleep.

I wanted some advice as to what would be most enjoyable but still safe; should I camp on the beach or stay at a hotel on the Island?

And if I did decide to camp out, what do I have to bring with me, how much does it cost, is it safe to sleep there overnight?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Vivian ;0)~

if those are your only requirements, you found the right place.

camping: there are threads on this forum that will answer your questions, my opinion is unless you're really into it, dealing with the gear can be a pain.

if you scroll down and hit "older messages" there are several on the 2nd and 3rd pages that deal with everything: access, storage, cooking, safety, etc.

Thanks. We have never camped out before and dont have the slightest clue about camping.

Will setting up a tent be a big problem? Do you think that its best for us to stay at the Kokomo?

Just a thought...having been in the *just need a serious time out in a beautiful peaceful place* life spot before, I'd suggest you get a place to stay, somewhere like Villa Fulladoza or Casa Ensenada (or any of the good, inexpensive places, and there are a fair number, those were just off the top of my head), before using this as your first camp out adventure: suggestion - try camping at home or nearby first and find out if you like it, before making it your getaway vacation...unless you both have a great sense of humor for Murphy's Law.
Personally, I really love camping, and hugely enjoyed the campground at Flamenco, (but I've camped out for over 40 years and know a fair bit of the awesome and awkward). But as more than one of my friends say to me...MJ, you go camp all you like. I consider camping having to stay at a Holiday Inn.
To me, if you need a time out of pure peace and beach, which Culebra offers in abundance, I'd check into a room first.
Kokomo is cheaper than most spots, with a very cool view, but not the most tranquil due to its ferry dock location, unless you love to listen to really loud music welcoming in and bidding adios to the ferry folk while you are relaxing.
(but if you choose camping, let us know how you liked it! no doubt you'd meet great people who would be happy to help you out)

We are going to be in PR for a week and we already have reservations at a mammy pampy hotel in Isla Verde for the last three days of our stay in the beautiful Island. So we thought that it would be lots of fun to be on a beach and not do a thing but enjoy our environment. We just want to wake up on the beach and we really wont require anything but a toilet and a shower head.

I know your an expert in camping if youve been camping for over 40years. Do you think it would be truly hard for us to find it camping accomodating?

Personally I'd reverse that and do Culebra first and then stay in the place with a proper shower in Isla Verde...

I agree with MJ suggesting the test run first, but I can also think of much more difficult places than Flamenco to try camping the first time.

and they way they build tents these days they practically set up themselves.

Thats what I meant I am staying in Culebra first than I'm going to Isla Verde.

So I shouldnt camp, huh.

sorry, I missed that - even if you opt for an inn on Culebra, that's a good strategy. water pressure is vastly better now, but still not quite what you may be used to.

I don't think anyone is saying don't camp, just be prepared for some inconveniences.

If you rent a jeep you can bypass the campsite cooking issue altogether. or conversely if you get a place and a jeep, you could always head out for the beach at 3 in the AM for a dip and a snooze if the mood strikes.

be careful about sleeping on the beach during the day however - that sun is intense (voice of experience) fortunately Aloe Vera grows wild and abundant...

I'd hate to discourage ANYone from camping, because it is a wonderful time to share together, intimate, and fun and will be full of good memories - and you won't find a much better campground anywhere...safe, beautiful. I was just referring to the part of your post about relaxing and then the part that you've never camped before. I just really like people having excellent experiences, no matter what they do. If you and your husband enjoy working together and deal with silly unexpected things well, go for it!!!

I think we are most likely going to camp out. Its only two nights and I'm sure the only thing that we'll have a hard time with is setting up the tent.

tents are the easiest, even the old-school type, esp. on soft ground.

have no fears.

The sand at the campground is pretty hard (weird, but so it is). One option is buying a couple of float mattress things for a few bucks each - that's what I did, covered it with a sheet and comfy cozy. Or...one of those blow up beds works too. They pack easy as well.

MJ: yes, the sand does pack down, I meant in regards to tent stakes - little need to worry about rocky outcroppings and jagged stones on Flamenco.

another reason in my book why it may be good for a first timer, don't have to figure where to pitch the pup tent off the trail, not too close to a cliff and while not directly on a stone formation also find somewhere to drive the stakes...

much less hoist a bear bag.

No one's mentioned Culebra Beach Villas or Flamenco Villas. We stayed in CBV #14 for 2 nights this month. Found it fine for our expectations, and didn't have to bring all the camping needs. The campground does look great, maybe next time we'll stay there, as we have camped in rather rustic areas. But, if you haven't camped before, maybe try the CBV or Flamenco for this visit. Whatever you do, bring all of the food you'll need, as the "Hamburger Man" left early before we were back from snorkeling at Carlos Rosario!

Are the Flamenco Villas close to the beach or the campgrounds. How much?

Thanks again all of you are really helpful.

Nunca he visitado Culebra y espero poder estar alli en abril.

Gracias mil,

Maria Ortiz
