Jellyfish around Culebra?

Hi again everyone! Just wondering how common Jellyfish are around Culebra and if there any particular areas that seem to get more than others? I know Jellyfish tend to be more prevalent 9 or 10 days after a fullmoon, but I tend to find them any time of the month if their around! I love to snorkel, but I'm not big on jellyfish.

There are jellyfish. I don't know that any one area gets them worse than another. The most common one is the moon jellyfish, which is harmless if you stay away from their underside/tentacles - but you probably know that already. Jellyfish on Culebra do not wash up on the beaches like the man-o-wars in Florida.

The only jellies I've seen were nearly transparent sea walnuts. I'm not sure, but I think they are harmless-they did not sting me when I inadvertently touched them, trying to get a dark background to photograph them. Best of all they are bioluminescent, with longitudinal lines of "chaser lights" to enjoy.

Hmmm, okay, thanks for letting me know what to watch out for. If those "sea walnuts" are anything like the little ones I ran into in Jamaica, then they are pretty harmless. What about sea lice? I got a horrible rash from that stuff in Panama one time? Any problems with that in Culebra or Puerto Rico in general?

Last winter there were occasional jellyfish around Culebra, i think moon jellies...they were roundish, had pinkish centers and short or no tentacles. i never got a sting from them and i swam thru many of them. this year i have seen ZERO jellyfish so far. Never encountered a sea lice in these waters. great news, hunh...best from Mary k.

It is possible to be affected by jellyfish if a boat has "ground them up". Although I have never been bothered by them, I have a friend who ended up with extremely itchy welts because of them. Carry witch hazel or alcohol or a rub-on cortizoncream if you think they can be a problem if you come in contact.

June: I've also heard MSG (common brand name Accent) helps. Another topical home remedy for stings is to mix a solution of tobacco and water (wasps and bees mostly, but who knows if you're in a pinch?)

If you are REALLY in a pinch, the best thing is urine...human, preferably :) I know that sounds gross, but every beach lifeguard and lots of other people I know have said it works. I don't know any lifeguards who have been asked to perform this service however; I think it's a do it yourself sorta thing.

Hello, in 2003, at Carlos Rosario, a young man and his newlywed wife (inexperienced snorkler's) stepped on the reef and hit an unchin with his foot. There were only 8 people around and luckily, one of us knew that urine would release the quils. After one of us did his "duty", alot of the quills released and he was bandaged and was able to "hobble" back along the trail to Flamenco. ...Not sure about Jelly fish but though this might be of help.

a friend did that last year - lesson learned - never drop gear at the entrance to Rosario and always wear "water socks"

I hate to be an I told you so guy, but I tried (to tell ahead of time that is)

I don't think she would have liked that solution, however effective...

but good to know

Urchins are whole other story!! I ALWAYS wear water shoes and watch where I step. Those things look evil, although in a kind of cool way.

Back to jellyfish! Last year moon jellyfish were pretty common in these local waters, but I havent seen one this year. I'm not too keen on swimming with them either, but last year i had to swim through thick hundreds and hundreds of of them (like a bad sci-fi episode, I was horrified) on a snorkel trip and i didnt get stung once. I'm going over to Luis Pena today, and i shall post again if i see any, but so far this winter, I have seen not one (though I've swum thru areas thick with teeny almost microscopic things that might be babies?)
