Where should I stay

Author: Marhsa Clark (---.93.213.151.ip.alltel.net) Date:   02-04-07 18:14 I am going to be a first time visitor to Culebra, but I have viisted Vieques several years ago. I can't seem to decide where to stay. I am looking for something with a great view, near places to dine and buy drinks. Nothing fancy. There will be three adults in my party. My husband's mobility is slightly limited, (no long hikes) but he loves the beach, a hammock, a frozen drink and good book. Any suggestions? Thanks for your input.

It sounds like it might fit your needs but I am not sure about stairs, not having been there. The proximity to places to eat and drink and the view with a hammock seem to be there. I think they have a larger unit that would work for three- check their website if you have not done so already. Good luck.

They have rooming house with 3 individual rooms that are right on the bay and a five minute walk into town. You will be within minutes of Mamacitas and Dinghy Dock for dininmg and within one block from Pandeli for some delicious breakfast and lunch. If you walk to the ferry dock (5 minute walk) you can pick up publicos (taxis) that will take you tom Flamenco Beach for $2.00 per person. Jorge Flores

They have larger suites on the ground floor, and a wonderful waterfront patio, easy walk anywhere in town. Casa Ensenada: a disappointment - building squeezed between the busiest stretch of road on the island and a boat rental business, cramped waterfront area, burned-out owners, predawn roosters sounding like they're in the room.

Author: Debbie (---.asm.bellsouth.net) Date:   02-14-07 19:20 It should be noted that Villa Boheme is also sited on a busy road in town, is squeezed in between other businesses and houses and sports pre-dawn roosters. You really can't get away from roosters if you're staying in town. Happy Diving! Debbie

Villa Boheme: 3rd-floor room, closed window on (less-traveled, but chicken-populated) road-end of room, open window other end of the room with fabulous view of the harbor & no roosters. Distance from bed to roosters: approximately 75 feet (through closed window). Casa Ensenada: first-floor room, open window (the only one in the room) on rooster-populated alley and neighbor's dirtyard. Distance from bed to roosters: approximately 10 feet (through open window). Also, factor in echo-chamber acoustics of alley. Conclusion: distant sound of roosters at Villa Boheme; virtual roosters-crowing-at-bedside at Casa Ensenada. Also, I want to mention that my general experience in 8 days on Culebra was of accomodating, friendly and unimposing Puerto Ricans who dealt fairly with me, while cocky gringos felt entitled to hit me up for the highest rates. Culebra has fabulous beaches, but so does the big island , along with more reasonable rates and real hospitality.

Our room was on the third floor with a balcony that looked out on the bay and up to the star-filled sky. I could see Casa Ensenada across the water and wondered if we made the right choice in giving up the free kayaks that they provide. Now I'm positive that this was the right place to stay. The roosters did keep us awake the first night, but that was mainly because we had the window open. The next day we wised up and turned on the A/C to keep out the roosters and the (very few) mosquitoes. The place was immaculately clean and charming to boot. We didn't explore the island much - we were just happy to take the públicos to Flamenco each day to swim and snorkel. Your husband wouldn't be near the beach at this place - it's on a bay with sailboats from around the Caribbean docked in the middle, but he would be by the water and there is a nice hammock that he's quite likely to have to himself. He'd have to bring his own reading - there are not many books in the communal kitchen. The other place that we stayed at on our trip to Puerto Rico also had hammocks and a great view. It was a place called Casa Cubuy in the southern part of the rain forest on the main island.

Paradise Gift Shop has a book room, On Island has books, Culebra Beach House and Butiki both have space dedicated to books, and I'm probably leaving out others. We read a LOT here and share a lot. Guests come and go who leave books in those and other spots like many of the private guest houses. I know Villa Fulladoza, and Posada la Hamaca have books to share as well (after awhile, the desperate local reader knows this stuff!) If you bring books and want to drop them off, or pick up free books during your stay...we're happy to share.

There was a nice room on ground floor near the gate to the street that might work well for you. There are a few steps up to the street from Villa Boheme. Our room was very clean and nice. All the folks at Villa Boheme were very helpful and friendly. This was our first trip to Culebra (not our last) and we were very happy with our choice of accomodations. In regards to the roosters, I actually enjoy them. When I hear the roosters in the morning I know It is not snowing and I don't have to go to work! Overall, our experience in Culebra was wonderful. We found both the Culebrenses and the local gringos to be very friendly and open. It did help to have our 10 month old along with us. He was our little 2ft ambassador.

It's interesting how every topic on lodging on this forum seems to stray off into indepth discussions on roosters. It's a good thing if rooster crowing is one of the most controversal topics at Culebra... I'm looking forward to visiting in a couple of weeks... dgd
