Music Styles in Culebra and Puerto Rico?

A couple of weeks ago, while waiting at the dock for the ferry to arrive, I listened to some great music being played by a D.J. Everyone loved it, and people were dancing the entire time. I also heard this same type of music throughout the day on my car radio. It was a very energetic style, and incorporated trumpets, trombones, and saxophones. Using my sketchy description, is there any way to find out what kind of music I might have been hearing? Salsa came to mind first, but when I listened to examples of salsa at amazon.com, it wasn’t the same. Thanks in advance for any help.

My intial guess would have been Reggaeton but when you mentioned the instruments involved it could only be Merengue

After listening to examples of reggaeton, merengue, and calypso, I remember hearing and enjoying all three during my visit to Culebra. Reggaeton seemed to be everywhere - I just didn't know what it was called at the time. However, merengue was most definitely the style of music I heard at the ferry dock, with its horn section and infectious beat. Thanks for help.

Salsa and merengue are the sounds of PR. But there are a lot of variations within the styles and some cross-over as well. My first visits to Culebra in early 90s turned me on to this csound and it dominates my music collection now.

Let me get a short list together...it's kinda like asking someone to list "american music"...there's too many genre and subgenres to do it justice or top be representative of the whole.

Thanks again for the info on pandora.com - it seems like a great way to find out about new music. I wasn't able to get started, however, because I needed to input a representative song title, or name of a group, before the website could begin playing music. Would anyone know a couple of popular merengue songs, or performing groups, that I could input into pandora.com?
