I just returned this past Saturday to New York after my 9 day stay in Puerto Rico 4 of which were spent in Culebra. I stayed at Casa Ensenada which is run by Butch and Jackie Pendergast two of the nicest people you will ever want to meet. I rented the Pequeno room which consisted of a queen sized bed, refrigerator, air conditioning, walk-in shower and satellite television all for $105.00 per night which was quite the deal.
I had breakfast each day at Pandeli which was 1.5 blocks away from Casa Ensenada. They had great coffee and I was able to eat their for less then $5.00. They offered sandwiches, eggs, pancakes and French Toast for breakfast. They also make soup and sandwiches for lunch.
I visited Flamenco Beach every day of my stay and I have to tell you that the water was rougher then any other time I had visited Culebra. Apparently, there was some sort of system that affected the entire Caribbean. The beach and the weather were incredible for my entire stay. During the day it was about 80 degrees with a constant 15-20 mph breeze blowing. Since the waves coming in were very rough I only attempted to go in the water on my last 2 days as the system subsided.
I had lunch on a daily basis at the kiosks located at the entrance to the beach. I was able to eat arroz con gandules, pinchos de pollo, white rice with red beans and a diet coke for $5.00 to $6.00 daily which was a great deal. I also had the empanadas made from beef, crab and shrimp for $2.00.
Since I was in Culebra during the NFL playoffs I was able to watch all of the games at the Dinghy Dock where they had 2 flat screen TV's right at the bar. I tried watching one game at Mamacitas but they were playing music during the game so I left to the Dinghy Dock. I would like to thank Hector the bartender for taking for the great drinks and conversation. I also had dinner at the Dinghy Dock which was solid as usual. I also had dinner at Mamacitas which was very good. I would like to thank Terry the bartender at Mamacitas for putting up with me during happy hour.
All in all it was a great vacation and Culebra is still a precious place to visit. I flew from Fajardo to Culebra ($54.00 roundtrip) just to maximize my time on the island. Flamenco Beach is still gorgeous and I hope the people that visit this beach continue to care for it and keep it clean. I would also like to add that the majority of the people camping out in Flamenco were young American teenagers and young married couples. This was their way of enjoying one of the most beautiful beaches in the world at a minimal cost.
