campground cooking
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi guys, thank you for all the info, it has been very helpful!!
A couple questions..

1. Can you tell me about the firepits? Are they just open pits or do they have some kind of grate over them to set food on?

2.Can you rent a camp stove? If so, do you know how much it costs? And does it include propane?

3. Is there a store at the campground for things like food, ice, charcoal etc?

4. Any campsite in particular at Flamenco that is ideal?

Thanks Kris

typical park grills, no store out there, just kiosks and a lunch counter

ask MJ about sites, although none are wrong.

there's an aerial view and as you look at the beach the campground is off to the right in a rather small area

(apologies to the moderator - it's from a different site)

[holding up hand in horror] Don't ask me which is best! All of the sites really are pretty cool, and lots of factors would make one more favorite than another. Take a walkabout and see what's available, it goes on for quite a long way. Whatever spot you choose (or get) will be the best spot!

sorry MJ, I did say none were wrong, I was only deferring to the judgment of others

1. The fire pits are constructed out of concrete blocks. Some have steele grates.
2. It may be possible to rent a camp stove at the parking lot kiosks. I don't know what they charge. One of the kiosks sells propane for $5.50 (when they are there). Sometimes they take a few days off. You can buy propare in town for $4.50.
3. Yes, same kiosk as above.
4. Scout around & decide for yourself which is best for your wants & needs. Really, all the sites are nice, as long as the place is overflowing (e.g., President's Day Weekend)

Any idea if the mix fuel canister 50% butane 50% propane is available on the island? I have a small stove that uses this mix.
Thanks.

Richard, no sorry needed! We're on the same page...I just don't like to have anyone think I know all about the campground and what they might like. When I was there, I was at the back of beyond and loved it. But I've heard others say, cool spot, too long a walk!
I hadn't been to the campground in a long time and was blown away at the way the most brilliant campers in the world, PR's, have upgraded...now they have private showers and all sorts of things that make camping a much more comfortable experience that just the basics.
But hey, I like the basics, so what do I know?

If you are flying to PR from the US, be careful about checking those mix-fuel stoves... last time I checked, baggage control does NOT allow those on board, unless you've never put liquid fuel in it. You may want to check with the airlines ahead of time. Really, the little single-burner propane burners ($20 new) work fine--and no problem with liquid fuels.
