Talking about campsites and folding in the topic of open fires on Culebra...
The island is classified as a desert island. The rainfall supports pretty much the same types of vegetation found in Utah and Arizona. Fires are a very serious and potentially deadly hazard most of the time, with the trade winds, whose cooling effects we love, making them even scarier. PLEASE camp only in supervised areas, and follow the rules for open fires. They aren't just arbitrarily formulated to be mean; they are absolutely necessary to protect our fragile paradise. Yesterday a nasty wildfire left terrible scars and taxed the community's resources almost beyond their limit.
The Culebrenses, turtles, birds, and Culebra lovers everywhere thank you!!!!
