M & J's place is on the hill overlooking the airport. Kiko is one of the locals there that provide taxi service. They obviously don't have any driving regulations there because he was visibly impaired and reeked of beer. Interesting! The taxis are really vans... many are old and beaten up, but who cares anyway since it's cheap to get to and fro, right? Don't let the "cheap" fares fool ya! If the driver of a van has a mission to go to pick up a group of people from the beach, he WILL ignore you if he sees there are only two of you and you need to get somewhere. I was in town on the Monday and got the attention (I flagged him) of a taxi-van driver. He sped passed me but had to stop a few meters down the road due to an intersection. I ran behind him and pounded on his rear door..... He just kept going. Jerry later said that he probably was going to Flamenco beach to pick up a group of people and chose not to provide me with any service. If you don't have a cell (and about 5 or so cab numbers at your disposal), good luck on trying to get cab. Take your time..... You're on vacation!!!!!! hahahah. Oh yes, I forgot to mention, if you don't speak Spanish, you might have some luck in finding someone who speaks English...... there are a few......
Word of advice...... it gets really annoying having to wait for taxis after a while because you're at their mercy. They're not what everyone on this site tells you. RENT A JEEP!
8) RENTING A JEEP! The rates vary, and by renting one, you can be guaranteed to and fro. Probably the way to go in Culebra.
Our experience: Hind sight...we would have been better off.... not thinking that everywhere to go required a taxi, and wait-time. M & J's van was broken down, and relying on taxis to get to the beach somehow didn't seem quite that appealing. If you want take a break from the intense sun and wanted to scoot somewhere for an ice cream or a pop, you had to call a taxi. After a while, you WILL discover that THE TAXI METHOD will get on your nerves! We chose to take M & J's bikes to Flamenco, and the exercise was probably needed and appreciated.
To be continued on next posting......
