In Culebra 3/9 - 3/11
Culebra, Puerto Rico

A friend and I wil be on Culebra March 9-11, and possibily March 18-20. We are not big into clubing (which explains our flee from the mainland), but do enjoy having a beer a good local joint. What is "the" hang out on Culebra?

Also, we want to rent a boat for a couple days on the island. I am an avid boater, and was wondering the quality and condition of the boats that are rented on the island.

And advice will be welcomed.

Thanks.

Looking forward to the heat!!!

The available boats there are not good boats, but you can get around.
And even you may find one or two places more, the point for the beers is Mamacitas.
Most businesses are closed very early in the afternoon, Mamacitas closes +/- by 1200.

I would encourage you to speak directly to the owner of the boat rental business, rather than listen to Capt. Guzman slam their boats. You will get better information first hand.

Contact information for Butch Pendergrast is located under To Do, Boating on this site, and also below:

The "hang outs" are Dingy Dock and Mamacitas for a beer on the water, Heather's for awesome pizza, good friends, and the weekend you're there, awesome music by my hubby. Lunch hour is through about 2:30 or so; dinner is 6:00 - 9:00. All the places do kind of close down by 12 midnight. El Batey is the place for local music and dancing later at night.

Hope this helps.

Happy Diving!
Debbie

Get you facts straight before you post please.

Your ignorance is showing.

Clearly it has been a while since you've visited Culebra.

There are several places to get a beer. This list is order of most "local" to least "local" (Just My Opinion of course). All are enjoyable in their own way.

Happy Landings
Hotel Puerto Rico
El Batey
Mamacitas
Dinghy Dock
El Eden

Hope this helps ... it's not a complete list of course.

Sean,

Culebra Boat Rental’s boats are in good condition. They are equipped for convenience and safety, to Coast Guard standards. Equipment includes life jackets for all on board, two anchors, a bimini for protection from sun and rain, swim platform and ladder, cooler, cellular phone programmed with emergency numbers, operating procedures, and a board-mounted chart of Culebra. The chart shows moorings and anchorages at coral reefs and beaches and it has photos of the seaward approaches to those areas.

We provide high quality service. Before you leave we do a thorough check out covering the condition of the boat, the equipment, and the motor operation. We are on call with a chase boat for emergences and problems with the boat.

For opinions and reviews from former boat renters, see “Boat Renter Comments” at www.culebraboatrental.com.

I will email a motorboat rental contract and more information to you.

Renting a boat from Butch for 2 days was the highlight of our trip to Culebra. The sea was kinda rough the week we were there making it hard to snorkel from shore in some places. Snorkeling from the boat at Punta Soldado and Melone's was so great! The boat had a great ladder for easy access and it was in perfect condition. I highly recommend renting a boat from Culebra Boat Rentals.

Thanks guys!

For all the good info! It is a great help.

Frank, as an avid beer drinker, I will make it my civic duty to visit each and every watering hole you listed. Consider it done...

See you kids on Thursday!!!

Since I haven't seen any argument about Mamacita's, is it safe to assume they have their liquor license back in order?

Mamacita's was serving adult beverages from February 11-25 ... so I'm guessing the answer is yes.

I wasn't aware there was a license needed. Look at the cab drivers..... if driving somewhat impaired is acceptable, then the question really is, is a liquor license necessary?

the list is good. But nothing beat the Satursday nite I spent at El batay having a few and taking in the frenzied salsa dancing. There are some awesome dancers there. I watched for hours and now want to learn how to join in.

People who say there's no nitelife on culebra don't know what they're talking about. (Sometimes there are also impromptu musician groups show up at Dingy Dock. We had brunch there once with the delightful sounds of a group of guitarists singing cuban songs. It was tremendous and really gave us a sense of being on island. I would have paid to hear those guys, and wish I could ahve recorded the session.

You guys rock!

Thanks for all the tips/ideas/bar lists. We are flying out of Charlotte Thursday am, in PR before 4pm.

One funny thing to share: I splangish is pretty bad, so I had a friend from PR call the campground and ask a couple questions for me. I sat there while they chatted, and after he hung up. He informed me of the answers to my questions, plus the added info "Glass is not permitted, and you cant bring any pet except your wife or girlfriend."

I am convinced that Culebra may be the place on earth that God intended me to occupy.

I am pretty convinced it will be. I have been all over the Caribbean, and I have talked to some sources that have been telling me to get to Culebra. If it is not what I have been reading about then I am easily fooled.

62 hours and counting...

You will not be disappointed. This guy Saje has spent too much time in "all inclusive resorts" not with the locals. Mammacita's is great for drinks and some of the best grilled fish dishes anywhere. Zack is an awesome chef. Lots of interesting boat people too. Butch's boats are top notch and he is most helpful. Jerry's Jeeps is the place to rent a vehicle. Don't miss Dakity beach. Rocky not sandy, with good snorkeling, but the sound of the ocean water running thru the rocks is mesmerizing. Lay back, close your eyes and listen. Also, go to El Eden for deli items; meats, cheese, wine and wonderful fresh baked breads and pastries. Tell Hanna the couple from Virginia said Hi. Have a great time, but lets not spoil it and tell everybody.
