Accomodation help...please!
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I will be on Culebra for 6 days in April and then on the way home in SJ for 3 nights. So far the most affordable, available, and supposedly not sketchy place I've found is the Caleta Balcony Rental. Does anyone have any experience with this? It is $90/nt. I would really like to stay in Old SJ but if there is a good deal somewhere else, that is still safe, I'm willing to try it. My dilemma is whether to book the Caleta or not. Once you book, you have to pay a non-refundable deposit (in our case, about $75). Any advice is appreciated!

Hello,

Give Hotel Milano in Old San Juan a try, we love it. Great location, clean rooms, reasonably priced, walk to all the historic sites and forts, rooftop restaurant/bar.

Check out their web site

I would go with the Caleta and Michael. For me staying in Old San Juan means old world colonial and the Milano, where I believe you cannot even open the windows, does not fulfill that requirement - even though it migh have all the modern world requirements you'd expect of a hotel in that price class.

As with all vaction rentals, the nonrefunable deposit is only fair. they are not a huge hotel and if you cancel for serious reasons, your insurance will take care of it. Don't expect small business owners, who will provide shelter for you, to cover your whims if you chance your mind.

my 2c ..

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

Also, note this, if you're white (Caucasian), you'll be guaranteed to taken for a ride. There's a price for "locals" and a price for tourists. Be sure to make reservations very early. Late reservations will be dear! If you're happy to stay in a "slummy" place with restricted accomodations, you'll pay from $90.00USD to $150.00USD. If you want anything half-decent, be prepared to spend much more (depends on what you want to spend for a room--location-- if you're staying near the hotel strip, you're at the mercy of what's available). IF YOU'RE AMERICAN, you'll be paying!!!!!!! If you're Mexican, you'll have a cheap holiday!

John, please refrain from racial insults. We all are interested in your personal experience, but keep your political views aside.

thanks

We have been staying at Hotel La Playa for our SJ lay-overs for the last several years. It is in Isla Verda close to the international airport, but within an easy taxi ride of OSJ. Right on the water, nice bar/restaurant, walking distance to clubs, beaches, casinos. Reasonable price, not fancy but clean.

We stayed at Hotel Milano in OSJ. Very convenient to walk around. It was $90/night for their smallest room (and yes, I do mean SMALL). However, we had our expectations set at the right level considering the price we paid. It was adequate for our 1-night stay. It was old, but clean. If you want photos, I took photos of the room. Email me.

John Saje,
We get it. You hated it. You're high maintenance. You need a cushy hotel room in which you can primp, and did not take the time to lift your head up and look around you at the beautiful serenity of the island, ocean, sunset and beaches. I couldn't help but notice that you said "locals" in one of your posts here and then refered back to them as "Mexicans." FYI, the locals in Puerto Rico are...(surprise!) Puerto Ricans. Also, if you're referring to working with the former Soviet state, it is Kazakhstan, not "Kazatan" as you wrote. Clearly you are very involved with that country...

John -
As a non-white American who appreciates EVERYTHING about travelling outside my comfy little home area, I find all of your posts extremely offensive and not at all helpful to any users of this site. While you may see yourself as open-minded, your comments about your entire trip to Puerto Rico are unnecessarily hurtful, and not at all constructive. I am often horrified and embarrassed by some of the Americans I encounter when I travel outside the continental US, who are often rude, self-important and completely clueless about the charms of other cultures and places with rich history, and fail to see some of the effects of a less-than-stellar economy or strong industry as just part of the local culture, and thus part of the adventure and overall picture of visiting their country (or in this case, territory). However, I am completely appalled by your horrific comments about Puerto Rico. It's true, not all of the hotels are fancy 5-star resorts you can get for pennies. No one said PR was cheap, particularly during this, the high season. You may have experienced incidences where you were "targeted" as a non-local and charged more for certain services. Welcome to life, welcome to the rest of the world. This stuff happens almost everywhere you travel, it's just how it works. In my experience, if you try to learn a bit of the local language, you are treated so much better, even though they know you are a foreigner. They just appreciate visitors who at least show some respect for their culture and the world they live in. Because really, unless you are going to a Club Med or some place where you pay thousands and thousands of dollars, what travellers seek is an experience, and adventure. If what you seek is luxury, you came to the wrong place. Chalk it up to that, a vacation that did not meet your expectations, and please stop trashing Puerto Rico and Culebra.
