first time trip with little ones
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hey there-
We are considering a short (unfortunately) trip to Culebra with our 2 and 4 year olds. We are good travelers - we camp, we've done plenty of exploring pre-kids and even the kids are pretty intrepid. Culebra sounds great, but I haven't heard any posts about kids.

Here are the issues I would have questions about: 1) where are the best places for sandy beaches/snorkeling, rather than potentially dangerous surf? 2) How easy/safe are the publicos, 3) Would any rental car companies have carseats? 4) Any great recommendations for a 2 bedroom place to stay (only request - good screens for mosquitos!) 5) How spartan or challenging is the boat from San Juan? Would we be better off flying?

I so appreciate any and all advice!
Dana

Your kids will have a safe wonderful time there, mosquitoes... there is always in the camping activity, I better stay at a small hotel.
For me Villa Boheme, good for the kinds near all stores, yet littel far from Flamenco Beach.
There are postings related to San Juan ferry, I heard that it only takes close to 90 minutes to get to Culebra.
Culebra is safe, the locals there are good people, willing to help and to greet you.
However, if you dates include those three or four days weekendsm there are people from the big island, that may not behave in an appropriate manner.

Hi Dana,
I have only been to Culebra once and I don't have kids, but I can answer a couple of your questions.
1) The water is very calm at almost all the beaches in Culebra. We were looking for surf and could hardly find it! (Playa Brava being the main exception.) The best beach for children is Flamenco, very nice sand, shallow water, no rocks, and small reefs right on the beach.
2) The publicos are very easy and safe. Our guesthouse had a list of phone numbers, so we just called the drivers and were picked up. No one drives fast really in Culebra. There's not 1 traffic light on the island, since there's no traffic!
5) We took the cargo ferry on the way there. It was very spartan and the ride was longer (2 hrs). I saw 1 child throwing up, and my boyfriend came close. The water was a bit rough and we got sprayed a few times. The regular ferry had nice seating, short 1 hour ride. No one was sick, but maybe the water was calmer. But overall, it didn't seem challenging to me at all.

Flamenco Beach is a very nice place to go. The water is calm most of the year and it is shallow. It is not the best place for snorkeling but it is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. There is camping sites and the are villas at Flamenco Beach Villas ranging from 1 to 3 bedrooms, all with A/C. e mail me if u need any more info
