Costa Bonita or Culebra Beach Rentals
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We're heading to Culebra in March for 2 days. Is anyone familiar with where Costa Bonita Resort is located? Is it on the Atlantic side or Caribbean? I can't figure it out in looking at the map.

We are trying to decide if we want to stay at Costa Bonita or at Culebra Beach Rentals on Flamenco Beach. Any opinions?

Snorkeling is our main passion, so I imagine we would want to go to Carlos Rosario beach. If we stay at Costa Bonita, figured we would definitely need to rent a jeep. Would we need to a jeep if we stayed at Flamenco and want to get to Carlos Rosario? How far of a walk would it be?

On a different topic, does anyone know if there are places in San Juan where one can get some lechon, or do we have to go to Guavate to do that?

Thanks...can't wait. This is our first visit to PR.

Costa Bonita is a resort that is probably more upscale in appearance than anything on the island. To most veteran Culebra enthusiasts, however, it represents what happens when people with money do not take the trouble to learn the culture and the infrastructure of a given site before rudely bulldozing ahead. The result is a blotch on the serenity of the place, and a business failure, to boot, if the reports of two bankruptcies are accurate.

It is located on the harbor (Ensenada Honda). I'm not sure what reef there may be nearby, but I've not heard of anyone extolling the snorkling.

You are well informed about Carlos Rosario's appeal as a snorkling spot. If staying on Flamenco Beach, the walk to Carlos Rosario, is easily doable for anyone with normal health. It is several hundred yards down Flamenco Beach to the parking lot where the trailhead is to Carlos Rosario. From there, it is a moderate 20 minute walk, with breathtaking views as you crest the hill.

You might consider renting a car for one of your days on Culebra, to check out the incomparable Zoni beach at the extreme notheastern tip of the island.

Thanks Doug. We definitely plan to rent a jeep, and have decided to rent both days we are there so we can fully explore the island. Zoni will be on our list.

One more question...
Would it be generally advisable to take the insurance offered by the car rental place? I plan to check with my credit card company, and also my auto insurance at home, but wanted to see whether people think it would be worthwhile to have it in such a small island.

Thanks!
Kris
