Fishing from shore
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Does anyone know where I can fish with my 6 year old son with a decent chance of catching something that we can bring back to cook for dinner? Also, what are we likely to catch (size, etc.), where do we get bait & tackle, etc. I'm trying to figure out what kind of fishing equipment to bring with us. We'll be down on Feb. 18th. Any advice appreciated!

My husband tried the dock near the museum and nothing. He tried the dock down the road from the Dingy Dock, and nothing. On our last day, he tried the shore at Soldier's Point, and did catch a few larger fish than the other places. If you can climb the rocks at Soldier's Point, you have a good chance at a good size fish, or if you take a spear with you, the beach on the left of the ferry dock is where the locals get parrot fish (good size there). We were able to buy 4 parrot fish off of a local (he'd speared them) for $5.

You can get squid at Milkas grocery, and we used hot dog bits as well.

Good luck!

Please, DO NOT shoot parrot fish!

Enjoy Culebra!

We didn't shoot the fish, a local was spearing them. Just wanted to clear that up!

Michael- Just returned last Saturday from the Island and it was actually more fun and beautiful than I had imagined. I'm sorry to say, though, I did shoot a few beautiful Parrot fish.................with my camera. :) My 6 year old got to start off his snorkeling/diving career in the right place. He loved it. Personally, I get lost looking underwater with a camera- I could stay out there for hours. I ended up with some very frameable, outstanding photos. Only dissapointment was we didn't see any turtles- everything else, but no turtles. Beaches are just beautiful (esp. Flamenco) Also, we did catch our fish off several docks- by the ferry terminal and also a mile or so past Dinghy Dock. Don't let anyone change this island. We'll be back!! Thanks for your tips.
Norm

Any standard rig with sinker, about 3 feet of leader to the hook and some squid will get you some action. Just about any dock will likely produce fish. Evening or night seems to be good for larger fish. We got snappers, but I've seen some nice tarpon come in the evening. We were just doing some casual dock fishing but I'm sure you could get some yellow snapper off the beach- I've actually seen them swimming in the waves at Flamenco.

Squid is a must, a 15 to 20 pound line will do, with a 2 or 3 ounce sinker.
I used to fish there a lot, even parrot fish is not likely to bite on a hook, they might. I catch very few, and always tried to get them back on the water. Despite what anyone may tell... this is not a good fish to eat.
NOt that it is poisoned, but this fish is full of crap.

Another fish that might bite, is the pig fish, throw that one back too.
It gives a good fight, but it is a beautiful fish.
I caught one some time ago with a friend, he did not wanted to throw it back, I almost cried looking at that wonderful animal trying to live.
My friend kept it, you cannot scale this fish, you have to take out the skin, only to be left with a little flesh, very little. PLease throw them in the water again.

Most of the fishing there includes groupers, yellow tails, and stripes fish ( i do not know the correct name in english ), but if you catch one you'll know.
Groupers are the best.
