3 months lodging needed
Culebra, Puerto Rico

hello all. thanks for having me on your board.

i will be coming to culebra this coming january to work with a friend who'll be offering charter sailboat excursions around the islands, and though the idea of camping sounds fantastic, i was hoping to find some place with more "creature comforts".

i have looked at place on craigslist, but they all seem to be catering to tourists, of which i will not be. i do not have a lot of money to throw around, and am using this little job opportunity as a means of seeing more of the world. also, not sure i would want to stay in guest house lodging for an extended amount of time, unless that is something you would recommend.

i have a strong back and am a hard worker if there's any place that's willing to do a partial barter for rent - i am a web developer by trade, and is what i do to get by, and also would be willing to barter web services for a break in the rent. any ideas from any of you would be most welcome.

i sail a lot during the summer where i live in provincetown, massachusetts. i am an avid gardener and landscaper, fantastic cook, interior/exterior painter, also do fine art painting, but am better at the former :-)

please contact me or reply to this post with your thoughts.

thank you and have a great day!

Do you have any renovation / carpentry experience? I *may* know someone who could help you out.

hi there, thank you for your reply. i truly appreciate it!

i do have carpentry/renovation skills - mostly gleaned as a result of my own, and friends personal projects. i will not be traveling with tools, so that may be a downside? my attention to detail, and willingness to learn others' methods and i take direction very well.

again thanks for the quick reply,

I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought the same thing. I'm an electrician (industrial, commercial, and residential), and when the owner of our last guest house heard that, she toldme there was a lot of work I could do. I think I would take a pay cut if I were doing it long term, but if you're good at what you do, a month or two might be worth it. gotta know people, though

Will, you won't have shortage of paid work, when there. Check into the cheapest place you can find, as a tourist. When there, hang out at dinghy dock etc, ask around and look at places offered. I would not want to be locked into a situation that you cannot really judge from way up North. Also if you will be sailing, proximity to a dinghy pickup place is a major plus. My advice: talk to hostel owners, get a good weekly rate, stay there in beginning find nice place, get some $$ jobs and then, next year you will have friends and know where to go :)

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

great info, michael, thanks.

i mainly would be bartering handyman services in turn for a break in the rent. i run a small web design company and do all that remotely. i am hoping my wi-fi with verizon is going to cut it. what is the reliable internet there? i will be coming for a short stay first to see if it's a good fit, then take things from there.

looking forward to visiting soon,
will

Will - You'll have no problems working with your cell phone as a hotspot on most parts of the island.

Ahoy Donna

I have a charter sailing business in ptown,ma and my partner and I bought Suzanne's vessel Gabra and plan to sail charters out of Culebra this winter,
Do you live on the island?
We will be down in November to get vessel hauled out in Fajardo do bottom and stuff and sail back. Hope to get underway come dec/jan.
At present planning on 1/2 day full day maybe sunset sunrise don't quit know what will work. My season is winding down now here but I have charters booked till 10/17. Will lay this vessel up and get Gabra underway.
My web site is dog gonesailingcharters.com.
Will has mated for me off and on since 2010. He is a good friend and great Mate.
Hope to see you

Cheers
Captain Ro
