Cistern Water

I have read that several of the rental houses have cistern water. Is that generally viewed as safe to drink? Do most people buy bottled water to drink and cook with? Thanks for any help with this. We are arriving in Culebra on the 4th of July for a week and are looking forward to relaxing and enjoying your island.

I've never had an issue with the water personally, and I've never heard of anyone else even mentioning it. You can always take iodine pills if you're concerned.

My grandparents' house and our country place only had cistern water and I never had an issue with that water. I only ask, because I know sometimes what the locals tolerate may be different from visitors.

I avoid it because the water is caught on the roof and funnels to the cistern via a system of gutters. Having climbed a ladder to recover a Frisbee, I observed quite a bit of guano while on the roof. most of the grocers sell 3 gallon packs of drinking water at a reasonable price.

I've been drinking it there for over 20 years and have never had a problem or anyone else in our group. And I'm from the states.

We were there the first week in July and drank the cistern water with no problems. They did have a house filtration system. Thanks, I hope we get to come back soon.
