Brava and Resaca
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We love hiking to Brava, the beach is so beautiful. But it has a reputation for being unsafe for swimming...some locals have even told us that children should never swim there.

Is this the prevailing sentiment, and are there any areas of Brava and Resaca that are safe to swim? Is it dangerous to swim to the small island off the western end of Brava? Is there good beach fishing there?

Finally, what is the right place to park to hike to Resaca?

Thanks!

According to my dictionary, "Resaca" is the Spanish word for undertow, surge, or surf. I haven't been there but from what I hear, the name is appropriate.

I have swam at Brava many times. It's the surf conditions that you need to be mindful of. In the winter it usually has LARGE surges that come in from the North. I did not notice a rip tide but that can change day to day. If it is calm then swimming is fine. Rasaca has the same surf conditions as Brava. Zoni has Cayo Norte in front of it to block the large surf; though they do sneak in on the Western end of the beach.

Like Geronimo said... it's the surf conditions at the time that really determine if it is safe to swim. I have swam and body-surfed at both Resaca and Brava beaches and had a great time, with no problems with rip-currents or undertows. Rip currents are more likely to occur when the surf is washing up a steep beach, then quickly back into the ocean. The last time I swam at Resaca the waves were very large, but the beach had eroded and was very flat.

Before anyone ventures into the ocean, they should weigh the surf conditions against their experience with ocean swimming, and make the decision that is safe for them.

Please also remember that both beaches are remote, not reachable by emergency vehicles and there is no one to hear you or save you if necessary. Err on the side of caution.

Happy Diving!

This would be the time to avoid those beaches for swimming unless you just want to watch the surf roll in:
