Culebra, Puerto Rico

We have never been to Culebra before. I have been reading and reading
about the island! (Can't wait to visit!) Too many unanswered questions. Should we rent a jeep during our stay? Should we stay right on Flamenco beach? Should we stay near 'town'? Thanks for a reply to those of you
who are 'regulars'.

You can search this forum for specific topics and find more information that may help answer your questions. The first time we visited Culebra, we rented bikes and used them exclusively. If you are in decent shape and can travel light, it can be done. We carried our snorkeling gear, cameras, and lunches with us. Keep in mind that it will be hot, and the hills are steep in some areas, especially going to Zoni. The second visit, we rented a jeep for two days and used bikes the rest of the time. The jeep made visiting Zoni and Resaca easier, as well as hauling groceries -- taking bags in and out of the jeep was certainly easier than balancing bags on the handlebars! The downside of a jeep is the cost and hassle of fuel, since there can sometimes be lines at the one gas station, and also finding a parking spot in town. If you have a group of 3 or more, bikes are not much more economical than a jeep. Rain was not a factor during the times we were there -- the worst we encountered were a couple of short showers that didn't cause any problems with biking.

Where to stay depends on what you like to do. Staying in town means you're close to restaurants and stores, but it's not as quiet and you have to travel to get to any beach. Staying at Flamenco means you have good access to several beaches, and you can eat at the kiosks at Flamence as well as prepare your own meals, but stores and restaurants are a ways away. We have chosen to stay close to, but not in, town both times. Bottom line is, it's a small island and nothing is all that far away wherever you are.

Thank you so much Linda. You were quite helpful. One more question.
"Close to but not in town". Any suggestions ? Specific places or areas to look into. It is two of us. We are do not need fancy....we do like have some sort of kitchen facility. Also...how would I find out when the last day of school is in Puerto Rico.?
Again muchas gracias!

An example of close to town would be the Punta Aloe area -- we stayed at Casa Culebra our second trip. We could walk or bike to Susie's, Dinghy Dock, Milka's etc. easily, but we were far enough from town to have less traffic and noise (not that town is exactly party central). Casa Culebra has a 2-bedroom unit and a 3-bedroom unit, both with kitchens. When staying there, Punta Soldado and Melones were where my husband did his early morning snorkeling while I was being lazy. Our first year we stayed at Casa Azul (Dollhouse) -- not sure what the neighborhood is called. There was a grocery store pretty close (Colmado Genesis), and it was an easy bike ride in to Pan Deli for pastries and bread in the morning. Check out Culebra Vacation Planners to see what is available on the island -- I think they manage the majority of the local properties. Others on this forum have mentioned other favorite places to stay -- just depends on what you are looking for and how much you want to spend.
