Since there are all these chickens running around the island, I was wondering whether any of the locals sell eggs. If so, where would I find them? Thanks!!! Katya

Good morning,
Nope. Same answer as, "do people eat the chickens?"-much easier to go to the store & buy eggs/boneless-skinless.

Best,

I always assumed that the chickens belonged to someone. If I killed one and plucked it I was sure that the owner would show up at my door demanding payment for his/her prize fighting rooster :-)>

I don't want to steal anyone's thunder, but there are plans to sell fresh eggs in the near future. I'll allow them to make their own announcement.

How near is that future? I will be in Culebra from February 17th to the 27th :)

I was really tempted to watch where the chickens roost at night in the hopes of collecting some fresh eggs (I'm sure I'm not the first!), but never got around to it. I'm sure it would be possible though, if someone were motivated enough.

Well, they are sure "free range" chickens. However, what they eat might flavour the eggs and I've seen what they peck at in the road . . . so I'm not sure I would indulge IMHO. :-)>

I grew up eating eggs from free-range chickens before anybody had heard the term "free-range." It was just how all us folks raised chickens -- they were in their coop at night, then free to roam and eat whatever during the day. They ate grasshoppers, earwigs and all kinds of other bugs, as well as grass and any grain or seeds they could find. The eggs tasted great! I would not hesitate to eat eggs from Culebra's chickens as long as I knew they were laid within the past few hours. Unlike the eggs you find in the grocery store, many of the eggs laid by the free-range chickens in the Caribbean are probably fertile, which means if they are a few days old you may find a partially-developed chick when you crack the egg.
