Is it possible to rent a couple of SUPs and paddles during our Christmas stay on Culebra?

The lack of response on this suggests there are no paddle boards available on Culebra. Too bad, as the view of reef life from a SUP is terrific. Maybe we'll bring one along.

I have not seen any for rent there but agree that paddling over the shallow reefs would be excellent.

I too was unable to find any SUP resources on Culebra, so for my trip there this past May I brought along an inflatable SUP. I was very glad I did... it is a great way to explore Culebra and the surrounding islands. I made two round-trips to Culebrita and one to Cayo Norte. It also made for convenient snorkeling.

Travelling to Culebra with a large board would be a challenge so I highly recommend an inflatable. I bought mine online from ULI along with a paddle. Had them put rings on the deck towards the nose so I could strap on a bag with gear, food, etc.... I was able to pack it all into a duffle small enough to qualify as a normal checked bag for the airlines.

Thanks! We figured that out and bought a C4 inflatable SUP with tiedowns etc and are cruising Monterey bay with it to work out any bugs. Any trouble with current or wind on the trips you made?

Coral can be fairly sharp - any concern about puncturing an inflatable?

Well,,,, I hope not. The fabric is very dense and tough, like a river raft. That's where iSUPs get used most... crazies going down class 3 rapids in the mountains. We're aiming to fish from it on the flats. A bit of worry there,,, good sized fish charging around with hooks dangling from its mouth. But I guess that's part of the adventure; not being perfectly in control.

Regarding currents and wind... there was often a wind from the SE when I was there in May. Both times I paddled to Culebrita I started in the morning before the winds picked up, and I had a tail wind when returning to Zoni after lunch. I did notice a northwest current the afternoon I went over to Cayo Norte but it wasn't too difficult to overcome.

Wanted to check out Luis Pena but the winds from the SE were strong the day I planned on going... I was concerned I might have a problem getting back to Culebra.

I recommend checking the forecast and planning your excursions accordingly... travel against the wind when leaving Culebra so you have a tail wind on return.

If you do go to Culebrita, I recommend you do the extra paddling to get you all the way into Playa Tortuga, versus landing on the western edge of Culebrita and hiking to Playa Tortuga. I tried it both ways and found that the hike took longer than the paddle. Just be careful when paddling around the NW of Culebrita... it is very shallow with many coral heads... but isn't too difficult to find your way if the water is relatively calm and clear. On a rough day I would consider just landing on the west of Culebrita.
