October Travel

My wife and I are considering spending a few days at the end of October on Culebra. I see people mentioning that many businesses are closed, but the veggie guy, Luis, will be around. My wife and I are vegetarians. Will we find much other than Luis's veg to eat?

A friend mentioned the ferry being short on boats due to repairs, will that be a problem? Same friend said the airlines flying to Culebra won't fly if there are not enough passengers -- is that a problem?

Also, we are concerned about the mosquito thing and Dengue Fever. Will the hurricane/tropical storm rains spike mosquito populations and increase the threat of Dengue Fever?

Should we just come some other time?

You have so many questions. LOL. First, October is the PEAK of hurricane season for the tropics. That would be my top concern. The grocery stores will have veggies for you. The ferry situation is bad right now. I think only one is running between Culebra and Vieques. try to fly. not sure about the airline not flying with only 2 passengers. After a long rain the mosquitoes will spike but if the wind is blowing good they will disipate. No dengue fever, just annoying red bumps. Enjoy your trip!

There have been cases of dengue fever on Culebra over the years.

The Dengue Fever center in San Juan has an updated map PDF on their website that shows the areas where it is most common. Culebra is not one of them - most are with large populations, like San Jaun.

Geronimo -- You should be aware that peak for hurricane season is now through early October. Later in October there have been occasional tropical storms (we will be there 10/22 to 11/2) but not as bad. I live in North Carolina, where Hurricane Irene seems poised to visit this weekend.

We went to London in February once and it was sunny and warm. Went to Stonehenge one May and the guard there thanked us for returning the sun after the rainiest spring they had seen in a long time. I'm not too concerned about the weather.

It seems like a lot of trouble and expense to go to Culebra instead of just staying on Isla Grande. We are wanting a relaxing and stress-free 2nd honeymoon! I sincerely appreciate any and all advice!

Good morning,

Although many businesses do close during some part of Sept/Oct. there are still places to eat/get groceries-remember we locals live here year 'round & like to eat, too :) Yes, as vegetarians, too, there are plenty of options (spoken from experience).

The ferries are ALWAYS short on boats. It's a constant problem. Sometimes delays are greater than others. FLA & VAL fly scheduled flights daily.

I know that there has been a recent mention of Dengue on another forum, however honestly, I've lived in the jungles of New Guinea & do not worry about Dengue on Culebra.

In the summer months/during hurricane season it is rainier & thus there tend to be perhaps more mosquitos, however as we are in the tropics, mosquitos are around all year long.

Many thanks to all for great info. This forum is GREAT!!! I'm really excited about going to a place that has such a devoted fan club! Also excited about kayaking and snorkeling, which this will be the first time for my wife and I.

Terri, thanks for the details on food. Glad to know we won't stave! We are definitely flying. I just spoke with a woman at VAL who was very nice. Also good to know the mosquitoes will probably be no worse than our own back yard (pretty bad!).

I want to thank all who sent great info about Culebra. We had a FABULOUS time!!! As I mentioned elsewhere, the flight to Culebra was breathtaking (in a VERY good way). We were approaching the island and a rainbow stretched out from it as if saying "welcome to paradise"!

I rented our vehicle from Jerry's Jeeps and he was a huge help to us, givng us a tour of the island and advising us on where best to find sea turtles. The little Suzuki we had was perfect for us and ran great.

We stayed at Casa SuMarco (overlooking Bahia Ensenada Honda) and it was perfect for us. We had the small room to use for our bags and laptop, while the bedroom was very comfy with AC. Only problem there was that the phones did not work (take a cell phone, but only turn it on to call out).

We enjoyed delivery from Homeless Dog Cafe and ate twice at Heather's Pizza (Mamacita's was closed). Also shopped at Holistic Aimee's as well as the grocery stores and got all we needed.

Mosquitoes were a slight problem, but we had worse troubles elsewhere in the rain forest. I was enjoying myself so much that a few bug bites were nothing to complain about.

We snorkeled at Tamarindo, Flamenco, Melones and Zoni. Best was our first outing at Tamarindo (we were both newbies) where we swam with sea turtles!

We definitely want to come back and stay a longer time at Culebra. This was our first visit to Puerto Rico and we were taking in the rain forest near Maricao before Culebra and then San Juan after. Our return flight was also special, with a delivery to another airport that took us over El Yunque going to San Juan.

I'll be looking forward to any reason to go back to Culebra, as often as possible!
